Sona: Maven of the Strings

Your hot new BFF

If you've come here looking for a build that gets you tons of kills and makes people QQ, you've come to the wrong place... Hell you've got the wrong champion... However, if you've come here looking for an incredibly well thought out and well rounded support guide, look no farther.

This build is designed to make Sona shine at what she does best: Spamming Auras and helping your team. And before we go any farther, remember, Sona is a SUPPORT, without your team she WILL NOT shine. Stick with them and help them out.

Edit: I removed Randuin's and replaced it with Soul Shroud, there was an error with my initial markup and this was supposed to be in it's place. Sorry for the confusion.

A look at the items:

Innervating Locket: I have looked at getting the Soul Shroud first but get more bang for your buck with Innervating Locket. It's a shame it has been nerfed with this last patch, however it is still a good item. Once you have this item you shouldn't see your health drop below 3/4 again (unless you're getting ganked).
Boots of Swiftness: or Mercury Treads, really depends on the situation, but you want to be able to move in and out of a hot zone without getting ganked.
Mejai's Soulstealer: With all those assists you're going to be racking up, why not put them to good use with a Mejai's :D
Aegis of the Legion: This will improve your odds at escaping those ganks, first by providing you some survivability, and second by extending some of it to your allies so that when they get there to help you you can return the favor. You can alternate which item you get first, this or the Soul Shroud.
Soul Shroud: This is your last aura item and if you've come this far... well you're going to need all the help you can get because its been a long and probably tough game.
Zhonya's Ring: Massively increases your AP and its active can come in handy. However this is saved for last because you really shouldn't be in those situations anyways.

A look at the skills:

Don't just cast your spells to heal or attack, if your team is fixing to engage pop Q to boost everyone's damage output. If you're trying to pull back pop E to do it that much faster. If you're going up to a turret pop W to provide extra defense. Sona is very situational and knowing when to cast a spell and when not to is very important.
"Q" Hymn of Valor: This is your pushing skill. It targets two nearby enemies, with a preference for champs. Try and time this so your passive takes effect right after you cast it so your auto attack does that much more damage.
"W" Aria of Perseverance: This is your heal. Careful of your placement when casting this. It always targets yourself and the lowest member that is closest to you. Try and stay in the middle of your group if you're running back so you can heal the stragglers and not those who have already gotten away.
"E" Song of Celerity: Your almost escape mechanism. You won't really escape if this is the only thing that's protecting you. It doesn't do enough. However, if your team is there providing support you can get everyone out.
"R" Crescendo: Her ult is perhaps the best CC for a support character I've seen, asides from Taric's stun... But he's gay. It sends out a wave making enemy champs dance in place for a couple of seconds.

Summoner Spells:

Honestly you can choose anything you like here, she's very flexible. I would however suggest not getting revive, or smite, these probably wouldn't help out all that much :)

That said, I use Clairvoyance and Cleanse. Clairvoyance because its useful knowing where those junglers or mia's are and Cleanse for those instances you go up against Sion or Kassadin and need to get away NOW.

I have thought of using Fortify, which would be really interesting if you find yourself soloing a lane. You will quickly get pushed back to the turret and, in my experience, they will ignore you to try and get the turret because you will not be able to do much and they figure they can gank you after the turrets down. I have not implemented this idea but if you wait until there's only a couple of minions left and then ult them at the turret and pop Fortify and you have been spamming Q while they were in front of you you may be able to get one or even both of them. But there's better ways to get kills :)

Runes and Masteries:

Not much here. I use the same for all mage class characters The only thing I'll clarify on, is that I do get an extra point into clairvoyance, because I spam that all game.
