I believe that building immense Ability Power along with Magic Penetration will definitely give you the upper edge. Especially with Malzahar's ultimate, Nether Grasp, which has crazy high AP scaling (1.5 per AP), you will be able to devastate any champion.

Summoner Spells

Since Malzahar has no defined escaping abilities, either flash or ghost can be extremely helpful if you're caught in a gank. Take ignite because it just adds some more power to his already devastating set of abilities, and then Malzahar will be able to solo basically any champion, with the right spell combo. Ignite is also great for chasing. Is your target getting away? Cast an ignite on them, and top it off with an E, and they should be dead in a few seconds.
