toplane is a very aggressive lane. Its a lot about trading and poking. It depends on the champ, how often you poke or trade with your enemy, with Fiora for example, you try to hit every vital thats easy reachable for you (3 out of 4) as often as possible to poke your enemy out of lane. When hes low and staying, you all - in. Toplane is the real OG solo lane, because its a sidelane and not near an important objective. The Herold isnt that much worth anymore and toplane can be hard to gank if the toplaners are good (or bad, depends on who you mean. If your toplaner is bad, its hard. If the enemy toplaner is good its hard.) Because of that a lot of jgl arent ganking top, which makes it a 1v1 most of the time. BEcause you are far of as a toplaner, you dont really roam. If you have shoved a huge wave in your enemies tower and you have a lead, roam mid for a short gank and then go top. Is its hard to gank, just turn around and maybe do scuttle crab or just run back top.

If you are playing a tank, go in the frontline of your team and try to tank most of the incoming dmg. If you play certain bruisers (like Fiora, Jax) or assasins/Fighter-assasins (Akali / Irelia) you want to go in the enemy backline and kill their AD/AP Carry and/or Midlaner.

Instead of fighting in every Teamfight you can go splitpushing. That means that you arent with your team in teamfights. Instead you are on a sidelane and you push the wave the lane down into the towersof your enemy. If you are a tank or the Hard Carry of your team, you shouldnt splitpush, if you have an ADC or APC or MIDLANER that deals a lot of damage you can Splipush. If you are splitpushing, you need blue Trinket and a control ward. PLace them in the JGL in a way, that you can see when enemies are coming. PLace one somewhere behind you, so you can see them when they coming from behind and the other ward (blue trinket or controlward) Somewhare in front of you. Some champs are really good at splitpushing, like Fiora and Jax.

There are different types of toplaner. Weak side toplaner, like Maokai, have no carry potential for your team and they dont need a lead to do their job. If you are playing one, dont expect ganks or ask for ganks.

Some toplaner are Hard carries, like Fiora, and they can 1v5 easy with a lead. Dont Mistakes OP Champs with Hard Carry toplanern! They serve the same purpose and ofetb do the same thing but technically they arent hard carries. Hard carries may need a few ganks to get an even bigger lead, so they can start to carry your team. Gank them in early game, after a certain point in time they dont need ganks anymore, often at level 6, 9 or at 2 Items.
