1) It gives you a little more health and mana to sustain your burst and survive through it
2) TF only has 2 offensive spells, so if the person in question isn't killed instantly you're forced to run away a bit
3) GLP offers a slow for when they try to escape after gold card
4) It provides 20 more AP than Protobelt
5) TF doesn't really need to move forward, and that could possibly get him further into the fray where he doesn't want to be.
I've been building GLP with a lot of success, so give it a shot or tell me why it's not a good idea.
Yes, I have considered it, but the reason I don't use it is that I feel it is a bit of a waste of stats, as it gives mana. I prefer the 10% extra CDR as well as the mini-flash. As you also mention, TF is not very mobile, so having an extra escape/engage option is very welcome.
That said, I still rarely get around to completing either Hextech item anyway: either I get so far ahead I first go Rabadon and finish the Protobelt as a fun item, or I am behind and I need to go for Kindlegem for health and don't have the funds to complete it by the end of the game.
I could imagine that you build GLP, but I would do it earlier, possibly instead of Morellonomicon, but that will ruin your CDR. What does your full build look like?
