When you say never take fiendish codex, I guess you also mean no DFG. But imo that is a great item for veigar. You can stun, cast dark matter and before it falls, you can hit him with the DFG. That way you have your stardard nuking program: Dark matter, balefull strike, primordial burst and 30% of their max health (given they had full health when you started). So DFG works.
No, I mean just don't just buy fiendish codex for fiendish codex. I like DFG, but I only buy it against Team Tank(3 or more meaty bastards). I have a personal problem with item casts, and I'll tell you why. Reaching up to press 1 in the heat of firefight costs a few more seconds than it should. And it may be just me, but buying a DFG makes people avoid you like the plague. Casting it can be a pain in the *** when enemies pile up in a team fight, and you'll often hit someone you don't really care to hit. I love DFG, and I highly recommend it, I just don't use it as part of my usual build. Its alot easier for people to read the items you have over the AP you currently have, so DFG is a giant "Stay away from me" flag. But that's my playstyle, it would make a nice final item though.
Also your ulti costs ****loads of mana, and if missed the kill... you will remain manaless and very vurneable. So clarity is also considered as defensive ability due to Horison.
I get your point, but really, I like using Ignite because it can also hinder healing. I tried using clarity for a while, and I found that after I get Rod of Ages, I rarely find myself using it, save for restoring my lanemates' mana. Also, as Veigar, you should never place yourself in a situation where you would be mana less after an ult. I mean this in two ways. One,if you are not very sure you can kill with your ult, you shouldn't be jumping into a fight. Having good judgment is part of what makes a good Veigar. Two, one shouldn't place oneself in a situation where they only have two bullets left. Ignite also works psychologically like Chogath's feast does: you can scare your opponent into making him move. When you get hit with Ignite, it usually means that someone is getting ready to kill you. Two seconds of a fleeing enemy is all it takes to get away. Veigar is pretty offense based when you think about it. Ignite early on could spell a kill for your opponent, meaning getting closer to getting that Soulstealer. It pays for itself in the end. In my opinion, Clarity would be great on a Veigar with cooldown reduction, because it would allow him to cast more and more quickly. Because I haven't toyed with a cooldown reduction Veigar I haven't tried this, though.
This build is great for mid where you're only worrying about the one opponent, I take a mana crystal when I lane bot or top though, usually to get Rod of Ages early for survivability, then work on my Ring or Void Staff for some fwoosh.
