So I was looking for a cheaper way to build my tanky atmog Volibear, and just messing around I found a ridiculously good early laning build. With my atmog builds I was really bad at 1v1 as well as team fights. As much health as I had, I felt squishy at all times. If I had a lane partner that worked really well with me, I could go right into a pure Atmog build no problem, but it took a lot of time (and money) to build. Stark's Fervor fixed my issues.

Basically during the early game it went like this:
Vampiric Scepter > Emblem of Valor > Merc's Treads > Kindle Gem > Giant's belt

Once Mid Game hit I started upgrading my items and bought some health items to upgrade later:
Stark's Fervor > Spirit Visage > Catalyst

Going into the end game:
Banshee> Atma > Sunfire

I went with Banshee's Veil and Sunfire cape for my final 2 health items, but I might try out switching to Warmogs before I get Atma's and go Banshee for my final item. With the bonus attack speed, lifesteal, health regen, and spirit visage to top it off Volibear's self-sustainability was fantastic.

I seem to hit some kind of ceiling with my damage around 188 for basic attacks, no matter how much health I have for boosting Atma's. With my build I listed above I had 187 damage per attack at 3200 health, around 180 armor and 150 MR (going off memory, might be off slightly). The entire build cost just under 13k gold compared to the 15-16k gold it takes for a full Atmog tank or CD build.

Anyway, give it a try, see if you have the same success with it that I did.

Update: I had a ton of gold my last game, so I picked up Warmogs like I said, and as my last item I sold Spirit Visage and grabbed Maldred's bloodrazer. My damage output was absolutely ridiculous. 150-200 damage melee, +80-160 from Maldreds. My attack speed was fast, not as good my usual jungler, Warwick, but I was tearing through Shen like paper and still had over 4k health. Went 22/8/24 with it.

Hey, have tried it out and had the feeling that something was missing but I agree that it was better then going for Philosopher's Stone at start. Also I like Banshee's Veil so at this point my build looks like your but it works great so why not. Will add in credit in the build asap! :D

Thanks for the reply and now I've changed things up a bit with build one. Since Volibear is still new to League of Legends I feel that there is not yet a perfect build for him. So with that in mind I try at all games to find a way to improve my build.

So some changes are coming and some are already made. Runes are being changed on build 1 after you pointed it out. Since most solotop is AD some armor will work great so thanks!

I had a few great games with tank Volibear by throwing in a force of nature, warmogs and thornmail combo. This worked great against a AD dominated team.

Since this is basically the first guide, and the build looks solid I'm going to +1 you. I do have a few observations from playing him all day yesterday, though.

Boots of swiftness are nice, but Volibear suffers from a lack of good (any) defensive cooldowns. I really prefer Merc's treads on him. Also, CD reduction is absolutely huge on him so when I am laning. The build I have had the best games with while laning is:

Regrowth > philosopher's > Merc's > Shurelya's reverie > Warmog's > Atmas > Mallet or Triforce > Frozen Heart

If I'm paired with people that have lots of snares or roots, I go for Banshee's Veil instead of the Frozen Mallet or Trinity Force to give myself some extra survivability. Wit's End is also a decent item to pick up somewhere in there, Volibear does well with at least one attack speed item.

Thanks for both of your replys and for the +1. Will try to add it into my guide.

Don't like replying back-to-back, but it won't let me edit my comment for some reason.

I also think Volibear is much better served going down the tank tree for the bigger CD reduction and health pool masteries, as well as CD reduction Glyphs.
