You can carry tournament games with no runes like HotshotGG once did. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.
Point well made, I'll experiment with Armor Pen Marks.
AD marks are horrible on Volibear because he has no frigging AD scaling abilities.
Also many top-rated guides on Mobafire are garbage. Don't always blindly copy.
I wasn't blindly copying, I was just using a example.
So if AD marks aren't a good example for Volibear top.. how come I carry ranked games with this rune set? It seems to work well enough for me

AH THERE YOU GO. Armor pen. I knew flat AD didn't cut it somehow. Armor pen makes so much more sense. Volibear has **** all AD scaling and his W is health scaling physical damage.
And also, Voli is a madreds jungler not a spirit jungler.
Right I know Madreds is also as viable as Spirit stone if not more, but currently this is my playstyle because I prefer more HP over Madreds and more CDR.
Also you think Armor Pen for top lane? Well its viable but I prefer AD marks.

The word wrong, cause for me, there is no wrong rune. You could say that you won't go for these one cause they are not the best past the early games as you said but they still not wrong ones. They are not the best ones, that is quite different in my opinion.
