To make the render glow I create a black layer under it. Then use a white grunge brush at the edges of the render and use gaussian blur (5-10). Then I can change the color a bit (in this case it was a light blue) and then remove all black from the layer.
New one I made:

I pulled up the original urfrider corki skin, made a second layer, and copied the image again with some rotation. Then I took the first layer and pulled corki to the left side of the image instead of the right side so he is looking towards the center of the image. I then used the clone tool and blended the images together the best I could and merged the two layers. I copy and pasted the actual render of corki onto a third layer. I grabbed a fractal off google that I feel went kinda nice with the image and coloring and stuck it in yet another layer, but this one under the corki render. After that, I put a little rotation on the fractal, then set the fractal layer to "overlay" over the new blended image and removed some of the fractal to make it less jagged and merged all the layers down. I think it came out quite nice. Opinions?

I am no expert in this matter so take my opinion with a grain of salt :P I think that it needs a little bit sharpening on Corki to highlight him over the background (You can alternatively blur the background a bit but it won't be very noticeable), other than that, I like the idea :D
Here's what I've been working on lately:

I will be opening a signature shop very soon, hoping that it helps me improve and contribute at the same time :)
