His shield is not useful in any way in teamfights, because his dmg output is horrendous and does not convert well to shield when it comes to competitive play. If you counter this by playing hybrid, then your shield is ripped through in seconds and you're nuked down. Because his abilities cost health your items are also restricted to initially be focused around regen, such as FoA when you could be buying better or more suitable items for the game. None of his abilities have any CC, and the only tanky moves he has is his W, which is horrible resistance compared to someone like rammus, and the lifesteal off his ult which is easily countered and, again, insignificant. There are far, far better picks for both a carry and a tank, and Morde is straddling the gap which only makes him useful in normal games where people are essentially derps most the time, or are in a team of derps. Malphite, however, is indeed quite nice but I would not pick him over shen.[/quote]
