I hate when someone picks fiddlesticks because he needs a team in order to do well. I'm talking about Amumu holding them in place while fiddlesticks ults in as well, etc. In order to time it perfectly you would need to be on vent, etc. I rarely see a fiddle do well in solo que.
You could get oracle in order to counter the wards. Overall Fiddlesticks is a early-mid game carry. Late game if he is not feed he is basically useless.

Fidd's sucks if you build him pure AP/mage. Need to go semi-tanky to be good late game. Otherwise you ult in and just get wrecked instantly.

Fiddlesticks is sort of a lack luster mage champion because he needs to channel his ultimate to get going and he needs to channel his drain to do any damage. 1v1 he's one of the strongest mages in the game, but otherwise he can't nuke very well.
Like Trojan said, his channels really hurt his viability. They are easily countered with a stun, and you have to channel out of sight of the enemy team to avoid being stunned. Even then, after you rush out with your crowstorm, you use your silence, then you use your fear (on the enemy carry / support preferably) and then you drain (and then if someone interrupts you well, that hurts).
He is a hard champion to play. I like him best as a jungle so that you can give your team an exp boost, and he's pretty good at ganking. Wards counter him hard though, and any decent team will by wards to put in the brush if there's an enemy jungler.
I never feel like I do too well with him myself. The best thing about him is his CC, so I would say focus on CC'ing the enemy team after you crowstorm in team fights.
Also, don't be the initiator, you will just die. :) Let the tank do that. I hope you're taking Flash to help position his ult too.

Jungling Fiddlesticks can definatly ensure easy gank-kills with his ultimate. He's pretty viable, but I'd say that you must time well, and almost perfectly (mostly like Yi) to actually make everything works. But yeah, he's extremely team dependent as he got two channels spells and one when, to do damage he needs to stand (his W/heal).

When i try to ulti from bushes they always seem to smell it *don't see me, i even snuck into a bush and waited patiently with an oracle once to see if there were wards* and they run away like a kid runs to candy when i start up my ultimate or halfway.
Besides that the hotkey layout for fiddlesticks is just plain stupidity.
Normally the atack skills are on Q, the support or 2nd atack on W and the CC on E but fiddlesticks has Q fear, W life steal and E silence..... this totally ruins my coördination.
Any suggestions other then, change your hotkeys?
For 1 champion im not willing to change the whole damn thing.
