When was it ever viable?
No, seriously, it sucked even where it was supposed to shine. Why else do you think it died out without a sound?
Being a main in the role with an off-meta champion is significantly better than being the main in a champion and going off the meta. People that "support" with mages like
Xerath,
Lissandra, and
Vel'Koz obviously don't play support...

I wouldn't really suggest playing Lux support unless you're a Lux mid main and really experienced with the champion.

If you want to help me, teach me.
But if you're a support main then there would be no reason to pick Lux. I specified the one situation where picking Lux support would make sense. A lot of people who specialize in one champion will take it to other roles when they can't get their main.

Personally speaking I have always believed the best champion in any lane is the one you are most comfortable with, the one you have played so much that you know their strengths and their weaknesses to the point you feel confident enough to play against ANY opponent and be their counter even if on paper you are destined to lose badly.
I don't believe in all this stuff where people are like "These guys are in the meta they are the strongest right now thus they are the best" - Yes I agree they are strongest but they are not the "best" by any means...the reason they are the best is because people have played them enough to bring out the best in them, those who just think its a guaranteed win if you pick them (I have been guilty of this too) have almost always been outplayed by someone playing a champion deemed "Weak" because they knew exactly what to do.
Of course Lux is doable, in fact I bet there is a few out there who will say Lux is their personal favourite support champion - Its all a matter of who you feel most confident with ^^

Well, at the same time, you can't neglect the team as a whole. I once witnessed a
Nidalee main pick it into support and everyone else was also on comfort picks. However, the main problem that occurred was that the team had no hard CC whatsoever. The best they had were some slows. As a result, when teamfights came around, they had nothing to prevent the enemy from hard-diving the team.
Meta picks ensure a few things:
1) A balanced all-round team that's able to deal with most strategies.
2) Everyone knows what the champions are capable of.
3) They are pretty damn good at what they do.
The reason that
Lux is an off-meta pick is because she doesn't provide as much utility as other supports, as well as her kit being based more around dealing damage rather than utility. As a result, for the role of a support, there will always be better choices, and for the role of damage, there are also better choices.
But if you like playing
Lux, sure why not? A fed
Lux support is also scary to deal with.

This again is also true and well put Sirell
I am not saying to neglect the team but I have in the past had people telling me to play certain champions because it would be "Best for the team" and I have had to ignore them because in truth I have never played that champion before and if I was to play them I would have played poorly and most likely flamed for what would have never been my fault.
It may just be because I am in Bronze though but end of the day I doubt any player on my team is picking their champion for the "good of the team" but merely what is best for them and if by the end when the team fights start and the team is working then good for us but if it doesn't...then flaming will ensue to make sure someone is getting the blame for the loss.
It is probably a whole lot difference in Silver or Gold but I wouldn't know
