In general, I would say enjoyment is more important, just because skill with a champ is something you can work on. If you're looking to climb ranks, however, the viability of a champion obviously becomes a lot more important and you'd kinda want to enjoy the champ and be good with him, ideally.
A champion you are having fun playing as, that is the most important thing.
If you are going to have fun with it, you will learn it quite quickly.

This most of the time. Unless you really enjoy Urgot or Poppy or something, then it can become really tricky. For ranked games at least :3
In normals, pick what the hell you want >:3

Urgot is actually not that bad ranked... Amagad I almost typed that with a straight face! :) jk jk.
I agree with you whole hearty. If you are having fun with a champion you will probably also have better teamwork in your games, just a wild guess.
Sun Tzu wrote about how to treat soldiers while making war. One of the things he touched on was how if the soldiers felt better, they would do better in combat. The same principle applies here. feeling better will usually translate to doing better. But of course that isn't the only thing to making war.
It's ideal to have both criteria met.
Myself for example, I main Vel'Koz and Ahri, both of which I enjoy so much that all other champions in the game feel inferior for my own enjoyment. Because I enjoy them it is much easier to invest my time and effort into them to become good at them, I enjoy them because they fit my playstyles.
Finally got myself verified! \o/

You acquire skill through experience, so maining a champion should have little to do with how good you are at the champion at the beginning.
I was a trash Katarina when I started playing.
