Hello reader. I come to you today as a broken man asking for help. I have been playing a significant amount of ranked lately, and I've gone mid in most. I've been playing a lot of mid lane Mordekaiser, and I've noticed that I either carry extremely hard, or I start feeding repeatedly, and don't pick up until the late game, where my competence shines through my score.

But what I want to focus on is reliability in the laning phase, and how to achieve it. If I ever die to my lane opponent alone, I learn something. I've died to Brand at level 2, and learned something about the match up, understanding that I can't melee minions early game against Brand.

But often times I find myself being ganked and dying in situations that I felt I had no control over. For instance, I started a game recently thinking, "no risks, just play it safe." That's when Annie flash+stunned me, and Lee Sin landed his landed his Q during her stun, ensuring my demise. This was around level 2-3. I felt like it was a situation I couldn't have helped, given I was at about 60% health at the time, which isn't all too low to lane normally, unless I'm wrong about that.

My goal for the early game as Mordekaiser is just farming out a Will of the Ancients and Sorcerer's Shoes... So, enough of my QQ; let the thread commence! How do you reliably lane with the sole purpose of farming for the mid game, while avoiding deaths at all costs? (With a focus on mid lane, but general advice is always appreciated.)

Ward the right side of the river, play more defensive if its between jungle buff times and if the enemy jungler hasnt been seen in a while

The other problem is that Mordekaiser has problems against high burst champions already. The only mid champs that Mordekaiser succesfully beats time and time again (off the top of my head) is Karthus and Malzahar.
Karthus because he can get armour before a Karthus Q and will always win a trade or straight-up fight, and Malzahar because when Malz uses his E so does Mordekaiser and negates all of Malz' damage

Maybe you shouldnt dig around yourself to find the problem?

Mordekaiser isnt an exceptional good champ when it comes down to a 1on1, he grinds down his opponent over time using the enemy creep wave to sustain his health.
Knowing that, your opponent can easily use it against you.

Just standing not behind the creeps but besides them is an easy way to counter Mordekaiser's skillset.
And an intelligent aggressive playstyle easily finishes him off.

-> Attack him while there are less minions and from a different direction than your own wave.
With a champ that uses some single-target spells you can easily beat Morde this way.

And for the ganking problem you described there:
That's a normal mid-lane problem not Morde's alone.
Use Flash/Wards and dont make the mistake to think that your opponent and yourself are the only ones out there.
(+ Anny mid only LIVES fot the Flash+Stun+Ignite combo...)

Ello Corwin.

One of the biggest ways to improve your game and stop your occasional feeding, is to take a few moments to analyze each game.

I know you said you do this, and you admit fault for many of your deaths. That's definitely a good point that shows you are going to improve as a player over all. Continue to do this please.

Are you last hitting? Or are you autoattacking minions? When you do not have vision (that is, a ward in the river bush you plan to stay nearest to), then make sure you do not autoattack minions. There is absolutely nothing wrong with their minions (and sometimes them) being just a bit closer to your tower than the middle of the lane. This will still allow you to last hit (without the added pressure of your own tower), and also keep you safe from that bastard's jungle gank.

If you are getting zoned, play it safe behind your tower. Time your attacks accordingly to get last hits after the tower has blasted the minions down. It takes a little practice to get good at, but eventually it won't be any harder for you than last hitting any other time (for most champs, dunno bout morde, don't play him enough) Know when you opponent could successfully dive you (not so easy against morde!). Once you realize the tower is going to be lost (sad, I know), do not be afraid to back away before it drops. It is much better to give a tower than a tower + a kill.

I don't play too much Mordekaiser or I would go into more depth on that. Aside to say: he is the best champion in the league! ahuehuehuehue.

And as a bonus, a small trick for that ****ed up Lee Sin fellow that ruined your day:

First, if you can get your team to invade his red and possibly get a kill on him at the beginning of the game, I seriously doubt you'll see any successful ganks from him in mid. You've ****ed his buff timer, screwed his level, gold, and placed him behind by a good margin. When he comes for that gank, you'll probably roflstomp him OR get away easily... making sure he is wasting time in your lane and stealing XP (and gold, if he's an *******) from their AP carry.

ALSO. Lets say you do make a mistake, don't have vision, and that bastard lee sneaks up on you for a gank (but you have been last hitting well, the lane is not pushed, and you are sitting comfortably in the sweet spot just a short distance from your tower...) FLASH. Flash has the potential to pwn Lee Sin's face off. Especially mid, especially with any champ that has CC.

The trick is, you wait for his Q to hit you (the energy beam). As soon as it does, and you just knowwww this mofo is aching for the gank, flash back to your tower. If Lee Sin pulls his kick, he'll be under the tower. CC him for some sweet, sweet revenge and make him look like an idiot to his team.

I hope I helped, sorry for the wall of text.

ExamplePrime: Small forum, eh? I was just reading your thread about the state of top lane! And being a very seasoned Morde (I've been hueing since summoner level 20, I'm at about 900 wins now), I know there are a couple more champions he can beat in mid reliably. Some being, yes, Karthus and Malzahar, but also Lux, Kassadin, and I know he counters Viktor. I've heard of him doing well against Vladimir, but I haven't experienced the matchup recently.

But yes, you have a very good point. Mordekaiser's natural enemy is burst damage. This may equate to, despite the length of the lane, and Mordekaiser's lack of CC/escape, solo top being a better place for Mordekaiser.

Darcurse: So, as I said above, are you suggesting that Mordekaiser would perform better in top? Or are you just saying Morde isn't the best pick? Because I have had Ryze's just sit in front of my minions and blatantly zone me. It feels bad. xD

AncientNecro: I'm definitely not the guy dying for the 3rd time and saying in all chat, "Lol" "this [insert team member here]". I'm at the point where I've been last hitting for several hundred games now, but as Morde, its pretty tempting to try and use your abilities to last-hit, in an attempt to grab several at a time. (two caster minions at 10% health right next to each other, just too tasty...) That'll push the lane. That may be one of my biggest problems as Morde, pushing my own lane at bad times. Telling myself to last hit, then just using E on the entire wave. Also, Morde isn't the kind of champion that has his turret taken by just one or two people. Ahuehuehuehuehue.

Thank you so much for the advice against Lee Sin. That is an extremely helpful bit of advice, and I'll be sure to instruct my team to do just that when we're up against a Lee Sin. :)

Yeah, somewhat like that.
Best way is to estimate which one of the enemy guys goes mid.
Like ExamplePrime already mentioned, there are some sure-mid champs that'll have trouble dealing with Mordekaiser but 3/4+ shouldnt, if played correctly.

But even top you'll have those problems if the enemy knows your weak points, but even so it should be less of a deal.

That Ryze is a good example:
He positions himself too close for you to reach the wave before he hits you.
If you cant grind him before that to put him on a disadvantage you're pretty much outzoned 100% of time.

I miss the old Morde. With shield you were stronger than the average champ, making you able to act whenever there were enemy creeps nearby... *sigh* good old times.

Oh Darcurse... believe me, I miss the old Morde too. But his hue still lives on, when he has the enemy mid outfarmed 3:1 and he pentakills the enemy team with a Graves ghost with 10% health, 100% shield remaining. Hue hue hue hue hue.

I prefer Hextech instead of will of ancients, because it has the slow your skills lack and AD makes Q and autoattacks stronger

After Hextech and boots, go for Randuins and FoN, depending on the enemy team

Get Rylais and the last item really depends on the match

With Morde you should start off boots + 3 or 4 pots depending on your build.

Try not pushing the lane to hard as its easy to do with Morde.

Whatever you do with Mordekaiser, DON'T do this.

Go WotA > AP Items > GA.

I go Sorc Shoes > WotA > Deathcap > Lich Bane > Void Staff > Rylai's personally, but i don't recommend being that glass cannon, you probably want to replace Lich Bane with GA or something.

Mordekaiser is an AP Carry, not a tank, not a bruiser, not any of those things. He is an AP carry with a tanky passive.

Also, don't run a page with health regen in it, that's a worthless page.
Tri lane for life.
