Riot's Matchmaking is pretty good.
It's better than HoN, where a 1800 mmr player could be matched against/with a 1000 mmr player.
LoL's Matchmaking strictly matches you with people of your level, or 2/3/4 man premades of a slightly lower level.
The only time I get mad at LoL's matchmaking is when I get matched with a 4 man premade and they troll me.
If you were talking about elo, then the only problem is the number of games required to properly match you to your true elo.
Otherwise, the elo system is fine.

The ELO system is fine as it is.
What I mean is that the matchmaking system puts you on lose streak and intentionally queues you with bad players when you do well.

The MM system intentionally puts you on losing streaks because it is trying to find a MMR where you have 50% winrate.
