Hello everyone, I'm just wondering why no one buys rod of ages on ahri. If I'm quite fed and i can get needlessly large rod i do it, otherwise I go for catalyst of the protector into RoA giving me sustain then ap to keep up with the potentially manavore early of Ahri. Any thoughts?

Catalyst is really expensive for an item that offers no combat stats. It's fine for people who just want to survive lane like Singed, Kass, or Karthus, but Ahri wins lane rather easily. The survivability and mana regen from Chalice is more than enough, and that's if you even need the mana, otherwise DFG is just a better option since you can pretty much 100-0 the other laner everytime your DFG and ult are up.

RoA doesn't fit well with Ahri's power spikes. DFG and Athenes are much better first item buys.

Athenes is a well rounded item that you buy on almost all mid laner mages.

DFG helps with assassinations but you might not have as strong as a waveclear.

RoA only fits champions who don't have super strong power spikes at around levels 6~9 or champions who focus on scaling. Champs like Karthus Anivia Kass (some people even omit RoA on kass now) use RoA well.

Imo Ahri needs a big ap item early to be able to deal acceptable dmg. I always feel weak as hell with her if im not buying DFG or Athenes on her.

It was definitely a thing when Ahri first came out. Back then, her identity as an assassin still hadn't been established, and for the most part, she was a tanky mage.

However, nerfs came along which forced her to actually build straight-up damage and focus on her mobility for survival, hence her assassin identity started to arise. Rushing RoA doesn't offer the same kill potential that a DFG and Athene's offer her, which is why she doesn't get it. She needs her core items, and by the time she gets her two core items, stacking a RoA is pretty much out of the question.

Thank you to MissMaw for the signatures!
