if you have "gamer common sense" you wont need guides, I only looked up item builds when I was new, I never read a whole guide, unless it was actually an interesting read. but for us pros it is common sense *sunglasses*
I believe guides are important even if you have common sense. For instance, how do you know that a Last Whisper is better than Black Cleaver without doing the math? Or maybe Youmuu's Ghostblade vs Phantom Dancer. It's not really something common sense will tell you, you need to calculate their DPS if you want to know which is best.
Also, I find guides really useful for the 1st time I play a champion. I check the top guides at each webstie (solomid, mobafire and leaguecraft) and look at the builds so I have an idea what to get. It's just not common sense, other people may use a build much better than your just because you forgot about a particular item.
