Just do them when you feel like you understand the game well enough and you're skilled enough to carry games, or just practise more in normals.
Also, I would say just solo your placements, besides, what's the point of being in silver if you don't deserve it and just got carried.

Yeah Stormcloak's right. If you are going into ranked with any feeling of doubt or nervousness, then it is not the time for you to do ranked yet.
One thing that is often overlooked for people starting their placement matches is the saying that pick order supercedes call order.
With that in mind, you should know that some games, you'll be able to play your favorite position, and other times, you will have to make something with the excrements that your team hands you.
I've played like 150 ranked games so far, and here are some of the things i've noticed:
[*] Never trust 4th pick with ADC. They'll almost always suck.
[*] Don't trust lolcounter.
Cho'Gath, and
Trundle don't actually counter yorick.
[*] Don't follow lolcounter. It's better to play a champ that you're actually good with, than to 'counter' your lane with a champ you're unfamiliar with.
[*] Don't contribute to any flame-offs that happen in team chat. Saying nothing is often the best thing.
[*] If you're losing - don't force a fight -,-' splitpush

another thing to add to utopus' list is DO NOT PICK MALPH OR SHEN JUST CUZ THEY ARE NOT BANNED, you are much better off playing a champion you know than a champion that isnt banned that youve never played before

I feel fairly confident about my abilities i just wonder what to expect especially since doing bad in this could set me back incredibly far in my journey. and on your second statement i really agree with because if you get placed in silver 1 and you deserve to be in bronze 1 it'll only set you back because of the hidden elo thing, and being that I'm a legit or quit guy

You have to expect yourself to carry the game, a lot people Start doing placements when they just hit 30, so chances are they have no clue what they're are doing; that's where you come in, later in the game you have to be a leader and tell them to group up and go for objectives.
Also never blame, just always look for ways to climb back into the game if ur losing and try to stop any arguments between teammates. Since most people don't know what to do and will likely throw the game multiple times.
the only time i blame a teammate is when they leave the game, because theres almost no winning 4v5. and its foolish to think you can carry every game, unless your a diamond playing against silvers, its a team game you have to play like it if you go thinking i got to carry or im going to lose its only going to hurt you. but i do try to lead games when i play. i have 375 wins under my belt not a whole lot compared to others but enough to start ranked... maybe

I would agree. At the same time, I have heard too many horror stories about getting stuck in bronze. I myself would like to avoid that. I've got a friend that had some bad luck in placement matches and ended up in Bronze and it's driving him crazy between flamers, trolls, and people just being bad.

In ranked there are 2 types of games, winnable and unwinnable.
90% of the games are winniable, they may be hard, but there's always something you can do to try and win.
btw, I started ranked probably around 250 normal wins with only like 425 games played.
My strategy for ranked was to play mobile mids such as Kassadin and tf etc that can gank other lanes. so if ur a Mid lane player you should consider it.
