Zilean is like...not that strong even in competitive play.
I can name like 4 other AP Carries who are better then Zilean right now.
In order of strongest AP Carry atm:
1. Brand
2. Cass
3. Anivia
4. Morgana
5. Malzahar
6. Orianna
7. Karthus
8. Gragas
1 and 2 not really debatable IMO.
Also, pretty sure Karth and Cass have the highest damage in the game (followed by Malz) in optimal conditions. (like assuming you land all your Q's)

I would say Brand being #1 is correct, but that Gragas, Ryze, and Karth are all very top picks as well. Cass is flavor, and yes, very high DMG output, but I'm not convinced yet.

Shushei used Brand on many occasions to win Dreamhack, Reginald uses Brand frequently, etc.
In regards to mister Bliss, you don't have to apologize. It's okay if you don't agree with me.
Taking towers is obviously the basic, mechanical function to winning the game. This is clear.
However, if you have the right team, there isn't much your opponents can do in the realm of pushing your towers. If you have a strong tank like cho, with a lot of hard damage behind it, forcing a baron fight will easily win games. Tower diving becomes easy as pie when your team is strong, with lots of damage, (Akali top or Cho top or jungle, or maybe even tanky trundle jungle, brand Mid, and Vayne bot with Sona or Janna) and a quick faceroll on the keyboard and it's GG.
Whereas a comp without a strong tank, without a huge cannon of damage, will not be able to dive and win.
It's precisely the reason you do need so much damage. You need a team so strong that your opponents can't win a fight under a tower.
