I was doing the whole green name is OP as a joke. Jeez >.>

I personally don't care how long it takes for me or anyone to get to veteran status. I remember how ecstatic I was when I got promoted to editor, because it made me feel proud that I could help the community. I figure that when I help the community enough/been around enough, I'll eventually earn veteran status, and I'll know I've earned it and not really gloat at all.

If I helped you, click that +rep!

^ I wasn't targeting you when I said "OP" on my reply, don't worry. On my list, you're amongst the cool people.

And I'm glad you used the word earn. It's something people should value more instead of asking for it. Cough.

They are right. Rep is not supposed to be "aim for this number so I can get this" that's why we didn't want the numbers public in the first place. We can't stop you from figuring them out though.

I also agree that saying "Only X reps till ______" to me always seems like "rep me so I can get my rank!" I hope to see this becoming less popular in the future.

Still, rep is meant to be an open-ended appreciation system. The only rule about it is that you can't ask for it. I can't stop people that try to find ways to boost their rep, but I think the community knows who does and doesn't do those things. I'm also sure the community appreciates those that have contributed even if they don't have enough rep to have a rank. :)

That being said, please don't "call people out" in this thread or it's going to get very ugly very fast. Please talk in generalities. :D I don't want to have to lock, hehe. Even though I feel like the OP has been answered the discussion you guys are having is good and interesting.

Know how you make it less popular, to refer to rep as you mentioned, Mowen? You remove the number and keep the ranks, in other words, hide the (220) and keep the "Distiguished" + colored name =)

*Clapping*

I wish everybody on the website read this and took this to heart. All the "omg let's be rep buddies" garbage is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo elementary school. It's just an instant loss of respect in my book.

Can't be done, my Epeen needs to be lit up proudly, on full display.

Well part of the point of Rep Robo is that admins wanted to give users something they could look at and be happy about when they saw other users were showing their appreciation for them. While hiding it would discourage frivolous +rep'ing it would also destroy the purpose, which is to make users happy that they're contributing.

And thanks Duff, you make me happy! <3

LOL. I pretty much agree that this "+rep me and I'll +rep you" **** is well...****.

I will say I find it pretty funny to see fairly new members talking about not getting promoted fast enough...it took me almost a year to get ~200 +rep(/promoted to vet, when the new system with multiple titles was introduced), and I was even quite active for most of that..(I've also making sigs for over a year now...there's some "free" +rep that had very little to do with my actual contributions as a member.) :PPP

You'll get promoted when you get promoted...don't worry about it...it's far more fun if you just make being an active, positive, and helpful member the important thing.

When I was a Veteran... we had to walk to the forums in the snow! uphill! BOTH WAYS! :P

Just wanted to point out that if you DO see anyone say something along the lines of "+rep me and I'll +rep you" please report it and we'll go slap them on the wrist. :) I know a lot of it isn't that blatant but if you feel like something's sketchy just report it and we'll decide if it's breaking the rules or not.
