OK, here are some pros and cons about each character:
Riven Unbelievable duelist, and one of the best DPSer's and duelists at lvl 1. Has really good escape/chase mech, small AOE stun, and her ult is good for taking out people who are running away and just out of reach after a close fight. Very good jungler, fast clear times, decent ganks. Not amazing, but more than decent. In top, sustain for days since she has no mana cost or anything similar. Good rivens will carry games.
Mordekaiser OK this is my IP farmer for 3s. If i want to get IP for a new champ or some new runes, i take top in 3s w mord and collect as much farm as the entire enemy team combined. His abilities are short ranged and not particularly sledge hammer hard like Brand or LeBlanc, but their CDs are pretty short to begin with, not to mention if you get max CDR. his passive, Iron Man, is ridiculously powerful if you use it properly. Usually by later mid game in 3s, i can 1v3 the entire enemy team and win because of it. The biggest issue with mord is, he clears a creepwave in a matter of a few seconds. Yes, this can be an issue, if you arent properly warded in 5s. Since he has no escape mech, he becomes very susceptible to ganks because of how hard he naturally pushes.

OK Katarina pros and cons:
She is a very high priority champion in teamfights, because her ultimate is so ridiculously powerful. Her lane presence is definately different from most champs, her only real major position in 5s is in mid, as an anti-ap carry. naturally she is pretty squishy (since she doesnt have access to Rod of Ages for early sustain). Very janky character if you know how to use her, altho a scarier champ may be Talon or Akali. All three have slightly similar playstyles, but Talon has the same kind of anti-mid feel as kat Shunpo, except that his also comes with a built in silence, which is def a plus. While kat's ult is indeed impressive insofar as AOE damage, Talon's is only slightly less impressive, but can easily (and frequently is, much to my frustration) be used as an effective escape mech. And a fed akali is the very definition of snowball (**** you smoke screen >.<).

Katarina is a very difficult champion to play. She pretty much requires smartcasting and has a pretty rough laning phase. She gets her sustain through early Hextech Revolver. Carrying wards is pretty necessary for Shunpo. A common mistake is people trying to use Death Lotus at the perfect time. The important thing is to get as much damage off with Death Lotus as you can and get the kill. You don't need the kill with Death Lotus, you just need the kill.Morde's boring in my opinion, I'd go Katarina, good katarina's are scary
