There are many interesting AP champion out there.
I my self, enjoy playing Twisted Fate the most.
The important things about playing as mage (at least those who I played) is....

1. Preparation
You will need to prepare your Mastery, Runes and read some guide first before play.
Since any of mage relies on thier ability power point, building AP ruin will make your start a lot easier.
Assume that you play as Annie and use your Q ability Disintegrate, this ability at level 1 does 80 magic damage + 80% of your ability power point.
If you have no runes or mastery your ability point at the start will be 0, mean it does only 80 damage when cast.
In the other words, if you start with all in AP damage mastery it will give you 7 point Ap, combind with
- Greater Quintessence of Ability Power x 3
- and Greater Glyph of Ability Power x 9
and Doran's Ring.
You will start with 7 + 14.85 + 10.75 + 15 = 47.6 AP that is even more than Blasting Wand provide with 860 gold.
Now your Disintegrate will deal 80 + 38 = 118 damage.
This give you HUGE advantage in early game.
Many players didn't think much about it and they suffer a great disadvantage and lose their lane to a guy who prepared.

2. A Bit Test
There is no shame in playing with bots or in casual rooms where you can invent more technique and tactic that will sure hell benefit you in your real play.
I spent some games with bots when I want to test a champ and that help to know how their skills works and how my position in the game should be.
Not every items in Riot's standard guide will works for champion or fit your play style.
You have to find it yourself.
