I took up smart casting a few weeks ago, and there's a few things you should know about it. I switch my hotkeys EVERY game, specific to each character, because having all skills on smart cast isn't a good idea. Here's a few pointers:
If the ability is a skill shot and you have a good feel for the range, always have it on smartcast. Kennen's
Thundering Shuriken, Ezreal's
Mystic Shot.
If the ability is a targetable shot and you have no need to know the range, have it on smartcast (note: takes a while to get used to). Annie's
Disintegrate, Nunu's
Ice Blast.
If the ability is AoE or you need to know the range, DON'T put it on smart cast. Nasus'
Spirit Fire, Annie's
Summon: Tibbers, Veigar's
Event Horizon, Corki's
Phosphorus Bomb.
The reason I switched to smart casting was because I sometimes missed a possible kill with nunu because the range on
Ice Blast is short, and sometimes there's a very small window of opportunity to get off that projectile - with smartcasting I was able to land that spell more efficiently.
It might be worth noting that many pros - Elementz, HotShotGG, TreeEskimo, Reginald - all use manual casting. Ergo, it's not necessary to be pro, but it's instead a convenience.
