‎‎ ‎ Introduction

Hello and welcome to our concluding article to LEC Spring 2023! We've had a banger final weekend, our Spring champions have been crowned and likewise we have the winner of our Fantasy Tournament.

Join us in a final recap of the last 3 series, a final shout-out to our champions and the definitive Fantasy leaderboard! Who took home the big prize? Let's find out.

‎‎ ‎ Fantasy Leaderboards

Congratulations to Canasal01 for winning the LEC Spring 2023 Fantasy Tournament! It's been a slow, but steady rise to the top for them. Bar the first week, they've been in the top 10 for the entire tournament! And after a second place last week, Canasal01 finally comes out on top! And that with a point difference of 0.1! They take home the grand prize of $5k! Congratulations!

hagelregn is another face we've become familiar with. They've made top 10 during several weeks, even being our weekly winner twice! They earned $2.5k for the runner-up spot!

Our top 3 is completed by Jonydasbalas. Right in time they've come sweeping into the top 10 for the first time this tournament. Perhaps they had a crystal ball, as they had 4 players that played the grand finals in their team. The smart teambuilding awards them with $1k!

Momo Cannon and Jitonce round out our top 5 and will be rewarded as such! Shout out to the rest of our top 10 as well as a huge thank you to everyone who participated!

Those who have been closely looking at the leaderboards on the E-go website, may have noticed that technically our #1 is the one and only magrob. That is correct, but since he's part of the E-go staff, he is not egliglible for any prizes. Still a massive achievement, well done magrob!

‎‎ ‎ Playoffs Completed Bracket Overview

BDS clean swept Vitality last week already to claim the first spot in the finals. On Friday the lower bracket runs began. MAD and G2 battled it out in a reissue of the Winter finals. G2 couldn't find their Winter form while MAD found their form. End of the split for G2, who could find comfort in their MSI ticket from Winter. MAD went on to face Vitality. The Hornets had been dealt a heavy blow by BDS in the previous round, meanwhile MAD were in a good flow. Convincing win for the Lions who made their 2nd grand finals of the year.

Last split MAD won their first lower bracket series with 3-2, 3-1 in the second round and then lost the finals 0-3. BDS was heavy favourite coming into the series, so would history repeat itself? For a while it really looked that way. MAD found themselves with their backs against the wall at 0-2. But after all the hardship they endured this split, it's started to become their comfort zone. Once MAD put the 1-2 on the board, the momentum shifted massively. BDS never recovered from it. MAD completed the reverse sweep to win LEC Spring 2023 and qualify for MSI!

‎‎ ‎ Final Weekend Recap

Lower Bracket Match 1

🏁 Game One

G2 kicked off the series by playing through the topside, making sure Chasy had a bad time on Gragas. MAD's response was to abuse Caps' weak early game on Aurelion Sol. Carzzy and Hylissang also had a beautiful 2v2 play down the botlane where they killed both their G2 counterparts. Game was largely even. Unfortunately for them MAD was too agressive in every play, thus giving G2 too much breathing room back. Things escalated at the 3rd dragon fight, where suddenly G2's comp turned into a steamroll with their Viego, Jinx and Aurelion Sol all playing off resets. Off the back off that single fight, G2 had really broken open the game in their favour. And they had the scaling on their side as well. Nothing MAD could do to stop the freight train, 1-0 for G2.

🏁 Game Two

Kennen open for Chasy, and so BrokenBlade pulled out the Akshan top in an attempt to counter. The idea may have been good, but the pick immediately showed its flaws as well. Good ganks from Elyoya made sure BB could not find any impact on the pick. The rest of the map also went fairly well for MAD, bar Hans Sama's Jinx picking up 4 kills already. Carzzy wasn't impressed and flexed his mechanics with a flashy solo kill onto Hans Sama. MAD had the advantage, but both sides still played messy. One of the main points of the match is the pause and slight chronobreak at an important drake fight. MAD got the most out of the situation and could look for more. G2 held on for as long as they could, but 2 Barons later, MAD could break open the enemy base. One last flank from Caps didn't result into anything while Carzzy mowed down the rest of G2. MAD tied the series with a sloppy, but deserved victory.

🏁 Game Three

If there's one way to describe game 3, it's gotta be "bloodbath". At 5 min there was already the first skirmish between the entire topside, with G2 barely coming out on top. A little later botlanes got involved as well and suddenly G2 were 4k gold up at 10 min. MAD didn't just roll over and die though. By making smart use of their vision they got a couple picks to claw back some gold. And with the drakes MAD had been securing, teams were effectively even.
Chaos ensured. Between Hylissang landing Blitzcrank hooks and Nisqy doing Gragas things, MAD fought tooth and nail. It didn't take long for the gold lead to swing into MAD's favour for the first time that game. From then on it was all smooth sailing for MAD. The Darius and Bel'Veth on the side of G2 are notoriously hard to pilot from behind and it showed. Against all odds, MAD found themselves at match point.

🏁 Game Four

This time G2 tried to play it slow. Don't let MAD play their own chaotic game. On the back of their Lucian/ Nami botlane they controlled the botlane so they could stack early drakes. Meanwhile Caps controlled the map through the exotic midlane Nocturne. The looming threat of Paranoia heavily limited MAD's ways to make proactive plays. MAD kept slamming their head against G2's wall, but couldn't find any winning fights bar an occasional pick or return kill. G2's lead grew and grew, resulting in a Baron and the Chemtech soul at 23 min. G2 need a couple more minutes to put the final nail in the coffin, but it was only delaying the inevitable. They tied up the series 2-2 to bring us Silver Scrapes.

🏁 Game Five

G2 went with a more or less standard draft in the deciding game while MAD went back to comfort picks such as Nisqy's Gragas, Carzzy's Ezreal and Hylissang's Pyke. Both teams went for level 1 shenenigans, and G2 immediately came out on top with first blood onto Chasy. Though it didn't take long for MAD to equalise the game through succesful toplane ganks and a collapse onto Yike on the botside. Both sides would continue to trade kills as the mapstate remained even. Hans Sama was funneled a lot of gold early though, so G2 was arguably in the best position. That changed at the 15 minute mark. MAD's botside caught out Caps and Mikyx, which resulted in loads of gold going into Carzzy's pocket. The momentum really changed after that play. Elyoya stole the 3rd drake from under Yike's nose, with a kill on top. A few more picks for MAD elsewhere. Add lots of tower gold as well. MAD continued showcasing the superior macro. Caps splitpushing the botlane led to a brief window for the Lions to start the Baron, and by the time G2 responded, the objective was gone. A full on 5v5 ensued, in which either team seemed able to come out on top. However, Carzzy remained untouched and ultimately even 4 members of MAD survived while G2 got clean aced. With the Baron buff available, MAD looked to end immediately. G2's deathtimers were just too long to defend, and so MAD defied all doubters to secure a date with Vitality!

Lower Bracket Match 2

🏁 Game One

Vitality took a blow when they lost to BDS. MAD on the other hand was full confidence. So it wasn't very surprising when MAD immediately slammed Vitality against the wall. Overaggression from Bo ended up in a skirmish where Nisqy collected 2 early kills, thanks to Hylissang roaming up. The storm had barely subsided when Hylissang was already back in the midlane. Another kill for Nisqy, even though it was traded. 'Gank mid and abuse Perkz' became the name of the game. Nisqy and Elyoya became monstrously fed and MAD controlled the entire map. Both sides faced off 5v5 for the first time around the second Herald. What followed was a massacre. MAD ran away with the objective alongside an ace, while losing only 2 members in the process. At 20 min the gold lead amounted 10k already. A Baron and Hextech soul later, MAD unsurprisingly closed out the game. Vitality could never make a stand in this absolute stomp.

VOD

🏁 Game Two

Finally the Vitality we've seen during regular season and groups showed up. Vitality showed proactiveness this time around, and especially Perkz benefitted with a big gold injection. The lane became unplayable for Nisqy, as Sylas vs Perkz' Tristana. MAD found some advantages in the botlane, but once Perkz was free to roam down, that advantage melted away. MAD kept fighting, but it became incredibly hard into the double DPS comp from Vitality. At 24 min, Vitality was in possesion of a free Cloud soul and Baron. The game really looked like game 1 with roles reversed. This time Perkz ended with 10 kills and over 6k individual gold lead over Nisqy. Vitality needed only 26 minutes to tie the series.

🏁 Game Three

Bo tried to start off game 3 similar to last game. Early dive onto Nisqy, but MAD's midlaner survived for too long and Elyoya turned up to make it worse. What initially looked good for the Hornets, turned into a 1 for 2. And with that MAD returned to their game 1 plan; camp Perkz. Elyoya turned the small lead into a massive snowball. Vitality held on well to the pressure though, made some plays on the botside in return and kept the gold even despite the difference in kills. Both teams had members getting caught, but it was MAD with the best position. While it didn't look as bad as game 1 for Vitality, MAD took all objectives. The game went late, until 36 minutes. Elyoya after a massive game up until then, found the perfect flank to catch out Upset and Dragon's Rage him into MAD's arms. With Vitality's main carry off the board, MAD could brute force their way into the enemy base to make it 2-1.

VOD

🏁 Game Four

Early game went even, both teams playing messy, but not many kills going over. Chasy accumulated a solid gold lead on his Kennen though, and same thing for Elyoya. A couple picks were traded, but no big fights to break the game open. It took over 25 minutes for Vitality to start up a Baron, but they misjudged the situation in their attempt to turn. Nisqy landed the golden Pick A Card so Chasy could flash in and land a massive Slicing Maelstrom. A heavy blow to Vitality, and Baron over to MAD Lions. It became so hard for Vitality to waveclear as MAD's comp could punish every misstep instantanously with the Twisted Fate, Thresh, Vi and Kennen. Another win for MAD Lions, for who lower bracket runs have become routine at this point. They got to face BDS in their second consecutive grand finals!

Grand Finals

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

Grand finals time, only one team can remain to claim the throphy and go to MSI as EMEA's first seed. MAD struck first through Hylissang's Blitzcrank, handing Carzzy first blood on a silver plate. For the first 10 min, MAD looked in control. But BDS struck back hard thanks to Sheo with a perfect dragon steal, while the rest of his team tore MAD apart. A couple of kills over to both nuc's Cassiopeia and Crownie's Zeri already, perfect for BDS' scaling comp. MAD did not give up though. Especially Chasy and Elyoya played strong and MAD kept the game even. MAD was even able to quickly snatch a Baron, capitalising on a pick on Adam. For a moment it looked like MAD would solidify their grip on the game, but as mentioned before, BDS had the scaling on their side. A massive flank from Sheo destroyed MAD in the 5v5. Nisqy was left alive though, which slowed the game down enough for MAD to hold on. A little later the Lions tried to deny the Chemtech soul, but this made way for BDS to force the Baron. At the 32 minute mark, only 2k gold difference, it came down to a final 5v5. Another Certified Zeri Moment™ for Crownie who got his second pentakill of the split, and at what an important moment. Game looked like it could've gone either way, but in the end BDS took the lead.

🏁 Game Two

MAD looked desperate to come back in game 2. Carzzy and Hyli got yet another early kill in the botlane 2v2, while Elyoya and Chasy demolished Adam. But the script was entirely similar to game 1. In a skirmish around the dragon BDS came out on top and collected 4 kills, split between hypercarries nuc and Crownie once again. MAD kept going as if nothing happened. Chasy absolutely popped off on Jayce, and Carzzy stepped up on Ezreal as well. BDS put all eggs into the Crownie basket as usual and it paid off. At 20 min the Jinx was monstrously fed. But the game was still wide open at that point. MAD then with the great macro again, securing the first Baron from under BDS' nose. The ensuing fight went even better for them as they took down Crownie for the first time that game. MAD in the driver seat, but it didn't last for long. A brief instant of overaggression from Carzzy got immediately punished by BDS and suddenly both Carzzy and Chasy's big shutdowns went over. BDS smelled blood in the water. In the next moments they punished mispositioning from Hyli and Carzzy again, to secure themselves a free Baron and win the game, as MAD's comp lacked the waveclear to deal with the Baron buff. BDS one win removed from winning their first LEC trophy.

🏁 Game Three

Final chance for MAD Lions. They couldn't afford to make anymore mistakes, so they played it very slow in game 3. Only 2 kills on each side had fallen by 20 minutes, before the Lion awoke. Perfect teamfight from Chasy on K'Sante, allowing MAD to start up the Baron. Sheo looked for an opportunity to steal, but was immediately spotted and taken down. No more coinflips if it were MAD. For the first time they were in control, and with Carzzy on Jinx they had means to match BDS' scaling. BDS were pressed against the wall, so they eventually tried gambling on another 5v5. Roles were reversed this time around, MAD smashed BDS with their massive lead and Carzzy became the hero with his first ever LEC pentakill to close out the game. A statement win from MAD Lions to announce we would still be getting a series.

🏁 Game Four

The momentum of the series had dramatically shifted and now MAD found themselves in the commanding position. Sheo tried countering Elyoya's early aggression on the topside, but MAD played the skirmish to perfection. Nisqy being first to the play really sold the deal to earn MAD 2 quick kills to start off. Chasy was having an insane series so far and with the small lead they'd gathered he quickly turned it into a massive snowball. Adam thought he had found a solokill onto the Jayce, but Chasy turned it back around in stylish fashion. BDS fell apart as MAD kept finding succesful plays while barely giving anything away in return. At 15 minutes the gold gap between both teams was already 7k in favour of the Lions. Needless to say MAD could just pick up a Baron uncontested to break open BDS' base. BDS had to resort to a last stand at the remains of their base, which initially looked decent, but the gold lead had already accumulated to 14k. It didn't matter and MAD swiftly took down the nexus in less than 24 with another dominant game to bring us Silver Scrapes.

🏁 Game Five

MAD prioritised some comfort picks like Nisqy's Gragas and Carzzy's Ezreal again for the final game. BDS with more standard picks like we're used to from them. They picked another tank for Adam, who was getting bested by Chasy all series long. They banned out Kennen and Jayce to limit Chasy as much as possible, but Gwen was still open...
The game was fairly show again, but MAD's topside managed to secure the first few kills again. Elyoya, a man on a mission, would determined to make it to MSI. For the first time that series BDS tried to fight back by collapsing on the sidelaning Chasy, but as it's known, Gwen is immune and the entirety of MAD showed up to save their toplaner. Things went from bad to worse for BDS, who could never finish off a single kill. MAD Lions had adapted and improved so much and so rapidly over the course of the series. After game 2 they completely dismantled BDS' gameplan, while playing clean and showing discipline. At just 28 minutes MAD destroyed BDS' nexus in an absolute slaughter. Not a single kill went over to BDS in the entirety of game 5. With this the reverse sweep was completed for MAD, who won their 3rd LEC split. Congratulations to our new champions!

Just a few weeks ago MAD Lions had to play a tiebreaker for 8th place to make it into groups after a desastrous regular season. Then they got 2-0'ed by Vitality into being 2 auto attacks away from getting eliminated by Fnatic. But MAD pulled through, defeated Heretics, defeated Fnatic, upped their game and defeated Astralis. And suddenly they were back in the top 4 despite all expectations.

LEC fans hated them. With their weak performances at the start of the split, people were worried they'd make it to MSI based on championship points if G2 won the split again. Worried that MAD would embarass the region internationally again after not making it out of play-ins in 2020 and 2022. But MAD Lions silenced all doubters.

People thought G2 would 3-0 them again, said that MAD should lose the series for higher chances at qualifying for MSI. But Elyoya wanted to make it to London on his own terms. MAD prevailed. Then Vitality awaited. MAD hadn't won a single game against them all Spring long. But the momentum was in their favour, and they obliterated the Vitality 'superteam'. The final hurdle awaited in BDS, who were clear favourites to win it all. But MAD said screw your narratives and expectations. A cornered Lion is the most dangerous. It's in MAD's DNA to fight til the end. Just remember 2021 Spring where they won the split by reverse sweeping Rogue. And in this finals in particular, MAD was clearly the better team.

After all the hardship they've been through, no matter how dire the situation, MAD knows they can make it. Because these players are willing to fight for each other, because they are hungry to shut up all the haters. And most of all, because they're having fun playing on stage. MAD Lions might as well have the best mental of any LEC team. Credit where it's due to their coaching staff including Mac & Pad. MAD Lions are a real team where every piece plays their part.

Many viewers questioned the Chasy pickup. But when it mattered, he smashed the so-called 2 best toplaners in the league, Photon and Adam back to back. He's our deserved Finals MVP. And that in full Korean carry style. We're lucky to have a toplaner in our league who can play champions like Jayce, Kennen, Fiora, Gwen... so well.

Elyoya, the captain of this team. Since his debut in the league in 2021 he has been consistently ranked a top 3 jungler, but next to his individual strength he tries to elevate his teammates. A true leader who improves any team he joins. It will be a treat to see him face off against the likes of Kanavi, Peanut and Oner.

Nisqy was always considered good, but never quite elite. Even though he took massive steps this split, improving his play in a way that's remarkable for a veteran player. After so many years, so many doubts, he finally has his LEC title. This victory will taste even sweeter considering he was snubbed from MSI participation in 2020 due to Covid, while he played for Cloud9. Now time to shut up the last few doubters on the international stage.

The botlane is a pairing of misfits, players fallen from grace. Considered as problems and kicked from Vitality and Fnatic respectively. Carzzy and Hylissang showed they can still compete at the top, they just need the right environment. And what better place to be than at MAD Lions?

Many did not want to see MAD Lions at MSI, but after their incredible run this split, no one can deny they deserve it more than anyone. Massive congratulations and see you in London, MAD. #EUwin
