Group A Recap
The premise of group A was looking great. 4 behemoths in the scene with a succesful history. A group of death where anyone might be able to defeat anyone on a good day. It started of with revelation Fnatic surprising the world by winning vs both Cloud9 and T1 in dominant fashion. Even in their game against EDG they played great and made it closer than it should have been after a disastrous level 1 resulting into Viper's fed Sivir 2 minutes in.

Although Fnatic's week 1 was great, it all came crumbling down during week 2. Their inconsistent regular season form returned at the worst moment, leaving the EU 3rd seed with 3 consecutive defeats, formally disqualifying them.

T1 levelled up their form again, with a meta that suits them better. Something different from the Zeri/ Sivir meta for Gumayusi, carry toplaners for Zeus (with a 10 kill Gangplank game vs EDG as cherry on top) and suddenly T1 looks reborn. We've already seen throughout this year how high their ceiling can be, so no surprise with them topping the group in the end.

The reigning world champions EDG still showcased that they're a top tier team. Viper looks brilliant as expected, and Meiko currently enjoys the resurfacing Thresh pick, on which he has already shown many montage-worthy plays. Yes EDG had to let T1 pass, but do not underestimate them by any means. Just last year EDG finished 2nd in their group before winning it all. They lost the top spot to... T1.

Even with how hard the group was coming into it, there was quite some hype for this Cloud9 roster. Sadly it never really seemed to click for them and the continous drafting of strongside carry toplaners never really seemed to work out for them. Ironically the one time they did draft the Ornn for Fudge, they won their 2nd game vs Fnatic, that eventually marked the beginning of the end for the Europeans. Unfortunately EDG and T1 proved to be a league too high above to convert the momentum into more.
Group B Recap
JD Gaming seem to fulfil the expectations as tournament favourites with a clean record throughout the group stage. Even a heavy, swift loss to DK couldn't really bring them off balance, as they quickly regained composure during a tiebreaker. JDG is hailed for their scrappiness and tenacity for good reason. When at a defficit they WILL fight back, and often make those miracle fights happen.

DWG KIA has been building momentum all the way from LCK playoffs and regional finals and with a meta shifting in their favour, they really look like a dark horse for the championship. Botlane duo deokdam and Kellin have really been upping their game, and together with a Canyon that can now bring out his famous Graves again, they made quick work with their opponents, bar JDG of course.

Evil Geniuses really looked like the best North American team throughout the tournament, despite only being the 3rd seed. While their record might not necessarily reflect that, they really put up good fights, most notably in their first game vs JDG that they definitely could have won. And who else than EG to bury G2's last hopes at making it out of groups. Nobody defeats EG 8 times in a row.

Europe's most decorated team didn't have the best tournament. Their mid to lategames usually were quite strong, often winning fights they shouldn't be able to. But it became painfully obvious that this roster doesn't have the same ceiling as previous lineups. Perhaps they relied too much on Caps carrying, but we've seen how that does limit their options. End of the tournament for them, but no doubt the org will be back.
Group C Recap
Who would've thought group C would've been the spiciest? Let's start with the elephant in the room; Top Esports not making it. For some reason TES never really took off. Losses to Rogue and DRX in week 1 made their situation dangerous, but ultimately losing to GAM in an absolute rollercoaster of a game was the final nail in the coffin. If you haven't already, I really recommend watching the dramatic ending to the game here. Only after the ship had already sunk they managed to look better again, but all for nothing.

It would be unfair to say TES sealed their own fate by underperforming, because the other teams overperformed. DRX might be the tournament's biggest surprise so far. LCK viewers will confirm: this team doesn't look like the shaky regular season DRX at all. Large part of the reason is Zeka being in the form of his life. Going into the Bo5s teams will have to permaban Akali and Sylas against him, otherwise it will become very hard.

With both FNC and G2 knocked out, Rogue was the sole defender of LEC's honour left. But luckily they hadn't missed their start. A 3-0 week one promised lots of good things. Every member stepped up to create a well-oiled machine. Sadly that machine stuttered a bit during week 2, dropping games vs DRX and TES, but thanks to our Vietnamese Brothers GAM, quarterfinals were already locked in. There might still be some issues to fix, but at their best Rogue can compete with the Eastern teams.

At least GAM made a huge impact and lasting impression by taking down TES, but with a 1-5 record they still ended at the bottom. We saw great glimpses from them, creative picks and lots of fighting spirit. It was great to have Vietnam back at Worlds, and it won't be the last time for sure.
Group D Recap
To nobody's surprise, group D turned out to be the fight between the 2 titans Gen.G and RNG, with at best a side role for The Oysters and 100 Thieves.

Actually the massively hyped Gen.G immediately dropped a game against RNG. Perhaps it was due to Covid plagueing their ranks, but truth is that the Korean champion looked lackluster compared to what people expected after their LCK dominance. They still won their next 2 games vs CFO and 100T, but it wasn't very clean. Fortunately week 2 brought better form, enough to best RNG and end the groupstage at the top.

It does look like going through Play-ins really helped RNG to regain their form. It's almost scary how GALA steps up at every single international tournament. Sadly they lost their momentum as the Covid curse moved on from Gen.G to RNG for week 2. It was almost sad to watch the RNG player cams with how fatigued and sick they looked during their last games vs Gen.G. May they get better soon! I'm certain they can do serious damage during quarterfinals.

The situation for CFO and 100 Thieves was pretty dire. Both on paper as proven in game they are just a league below their Eastern competitors. At least both of them were able to get a victory against each other to somewhat save their pride.

JDG vs Rogue Preview
Let's be fair, JD Gaming should win this. Even on EU Hopium, JDG looks crazy good. They entered Worlds as a big favourite and so far they have been living up to those expectations. Quite the achievement considering their strong group as well.

Rogue on the other hand is good, and have already proven they can take on LPL giants. Though JDG looks stronger and more experienced across the board and to defeat them in a Bo5 is a giant task. Their struggle during week 2 definitely doesn't bide well.

Either way let it be known that overconfidence is a silent killer. And losing a few games can be better in the long run as to identify points of improvement. And question always remains how 369's dice will land... Will there be an upset is the question?
T1 vs RNG Preview
T1 and RNG are both among the most famous and most decorated orgs throughout LoL's history. Another Bo5 between these teams promises firework. They only last met at MSI this year, where RNG barely hailed victorious in a 3-2.

It is an interesting matchup on all fronts, but the most crucial points might be in the sidelanes. Both Zeus and Breathe have had a great tournament so far, and the current toplane meta allows for explosive matchups. Down in the botlane we got 4 more strong players. Can the revitalized Gumayusi and Keria take down an unleashed GALA and experienced veteran Ming?

This matchup can go either way. Personally I'd give it to T1, with how they have been regaining their form so far. We've seen how high their ceiling can be during spring and now they should be hungry to take revenge for the lost MSI final. Whoever comes out on top, this will be an absolute banger.
Gen.G vs DWG KIA Preview
Korean civil war already. Many LCK are sad with this drawing, but at least there will be great games to watch. Gen.G is obviously the favourite to advance. But there are many silver linings for DK fans.

The jungle meta might favour Canyon. A weaker Poppy and a stronger Graves might not be the best news for Peanut. Though the Gen.G jungler has more than enough aces up his sleeve, just look at his Morgana jungle back in LCK for example. Chovy vs Showmaker will be a joy to watch, no matter whoever comes out on top. And LCK MVP Ruler vs a deokdam in form... It could end up being a very explosive series.

Even if Gen.G lives up to their status as favourites, I personally think Damwon will make it a very close series. DK didn't become World champion in 2020 for no reason.
DRX vs EDG Preview
There is at least one big storyline for this matchup: Deft vs his former team. The legendary ADC has never won Worlds (yet?) and now he might be at his last chance, he has to overcome his old love whom he won MSI of all teams. And they are the reigning champions nonetheless.

For all Deft has seen in his long career, the matchup vs Viper might be one of the toughest he'll ever experience. Viper is out for blood and trophies again, but if there's one man who could neutralize that lane, it might be Deft.

Others to watch for in this matchup are obviously the midlaners. On-fire Zeka vs another legendary player, Scout. The latter might have a slight edge due to experience and a larger champion pool, but Zeka has the confidence and the momentum al the way through play-ins. What is certain though is that there will be Akali prio on both sides...
