they were pissed at him cause he called them out. mind you you sign a confidentiality agreement with every company private and government which means he broke that agreement and is subject to the terms of such an agreement as we all are, but every private company has a whistleblower type of system set up to protect you...how well it protects you is debatable but the system is in place. also who are you going to blow the whistle to in the government? they are all on the same page with a thorough belief that what they are doing is for the good of the country. now that they have calmed down a bit it is in their best interest to get him back to the states. he seems like a bright guy but i feel like he could have presented his argument in a more effective way that would have kept things from blowing up like they did and keep him from facing the challenges he now faces.

No, that's the problem. He could not have done this in any other way.
They ask that people go up the chain of command and reports it when they see something that they think should not be happening, but you know what happens to people that actually did this?
They get harassed by co-workers, demoted, fired and even blacklisted.
It's the higher-ups that want this **** to go on, so why would you report it to them?
The only way to expose and prevent these kinds of crimes is to go public with them.

also who are you going to blow the whistle to in the government? they are all on the same page with a thorough belief that what they are doing is for the good of the country.
i was hinting to the idea of using a third party or source to report the data/findings outside of you personally presenting them to avoid direct connection. or something along those lines.

Yeah, but I don't think that's gonna work. The source needs to be verified, and that leaves at least one person that knows the identity of the wistle-blower.
There will always be a trail of bread-crumbs, and if they look hard enough, they will find the source.

Peter Buxtun tried twice to use the proper channels before leaking it to the media.
Daniel Ellsberg tried covertly with known opponants of the war, this could be considered internal/proper channels, he didn't quite leak it intially, but still handed out everything he had after the initial leak.
Frank Serpico reported his findings through proper channels before leaking it to the media.
Mark Felt aka Deepthroat, was at the very top of the pyramid, who could he report to? When the highest authority is among the wrongdoers, who do you report to?
A. Ernest Fitzgerald was 'adviced' to keep his mouth shut by high ranking officials. Clearly he didn't. :D
Karen Silkwood is sadly enough a prime example of why one runs first, then leaks the documents. Proper channels were used again, to no avail.
Frank Snepp filed a report, which wasn't accepted. He then wrote a book based on said report. Then got sued, lost the case and lost all the royalties from said book to the CIA. Funny one here is that Jimmy Carter allowed this to happen even though he had at the time proposed better security for whistle blowers. Talk about two-faced politicians.
Mark Whitacre was at the top level, thus there was no other way for him to report this. He was also at fault cause he was part of the crime. He pleaded guilty and took his punishment like man. Ironically, his sentence was 3 times as long as his partners in crime.
Linda Tripp is only one of the few examples where using the proper channels actually panned out. After she failed to use the media though.
Marsha Coleman-Adebayo is another fine example of how the proper/internal channels failed to react, while public interest changed the laws. This was achieved however using proper channels.
Jesselyn Radack had one job. To report unethical actions. But what happens when someone like her gives a negative report? Nothing good.....
Sibel Edmonds, 9/11 conspiracy theorists love her work. Also, proper channels not working. But what else were you expecting?
Perry Fellrock was one of the few that couldn't use the proper channels. For the existence of the NSA was one of the best kept secrets at the time.
