.hack has the same MMO game setting(and did it waaay before). You might wanna have a look at it (I don't know much about it tho).
SAO is good because of the art and premise. The first few episodes are great.
Beyond that there's tons of series that have done most things better.

That review is so biased, how can a person who has no knowledge about MMOs give constructive review about anime on MMOs? (guy from anime zone said himself he has no idea)
I'm not trying to defend SAO, it has it's flaws, badly designed characters...

He does not play MMOs, so what? That is not an MMO. It's an animated story. He will rate it as such.
You ARE trying to protect it. You're trying to illegitimize his review of it because of an irrelevant fact.
