...I wish I was smart enough to understand why.

Nice work people, nice work.

Now how are you going to make it so a person could do that?

Fantastic artwork by Xiaowiriamu & TheNamelessBard!

Superconductors are formed by taking certain materials and reducing them to incredibly low temperatures. Most materials have no conductivity, and therefore no magnetic properties, because at low temperatures electrons are incredibly stable. There's no charge to move. Superconductors are an exception to this principle.

What caucheka mentioned above (and I'm not sure if he's kidding or not) is actually an electromagnet. Not the same thing, but it does have some useful applications when paired up with a superconductor since an electromagnet is still a "magnet" in an applied sense.

Applications for this can be seen in the superconductor's track in the video. It creates an almost frictionless movement (only thing is wind resistance) and highly stable motion. Conceivably, you could have a long enough rod of a superconductor's material, chill it entirely with liquid nitrogen or some other source, and move things along an electromagnetic track. It operates on a similar principle as a monorail.

TL;DR: As far as applications go, I'd say just make sidewalks out of magnets and get superconductor hoverboards.
