Okay okay, Terraria came up after Minecraft and includes its basic build system.
BUT it includes cool stuff like big bad-*** monsters and flameswords.
Also its hard to concentrate because of all those shiny shiny objects...
Wont blame you, in fact I like them, too.
Maybe s1 else with enough experience on this matter can explain that part a bit better (since i cant) just that:
1. Minecraft pioneered this genre more or less
2. Its way harder to work with the, ofc also pixelated, but in fact 3D Minecraft compared to a sidescroller like Terraria.
Played both, fun to create stuff and Terraria got a good monster/survival system, but in Minecraft its way better to marvel at the suff you build.
But cause of the little extensions into different aspects of gaming, no long term fun.
You still lack a proper objective in both and enough variety to keep you busy until you reach it.
The "kill evil stuff" genre?
That was pioneered by CRTAD, way back in 1947.
Terraria at it's core has one objective as a game, and that is to advance your character and defeat the final boss.
That genre is usually called "RPG", and when it involves light platforming, and a little bit of puzzle solving, that is called an "adventure" game, and terraria has light elements of sandbox.
Minecraft at it's core has one main objective, to kill the final boss. But when Terraria was released, Minecraft had no final boss. It's single objective was to build things.
The genre that Minecraft falls under is "sandbox" and it has light elements of adventure.
The problem with calling Minecraft an adventure game, is how shallow it's combat systems and goals are, and how loosely character advancement is tied to combat.
See, Terraria is akin to Legend of Zelda, in that it is a game where you progress through the game, grow as a character, and have a final objective in the form of a boss.
Where as Minecraft is more akin to Simcity, where you build things, and manipulate them for fun. (a la dynamite.)
Minecraft and Terraria are worlds different.

You are a heartless scumbag and deserve to rot in hell forever.
:D
not gonna discuss with you the "pirating indie games"theme, i got enough from this discussions on Piratesites aswell gulli or boerse(german sites, similiar to torrent stuff but with a community), i only say: You rly need to arrange your priority when you mean someone should rot in hell forever cuz of something like this, and if its about money, i wont disagree that im a heartless scumbag, but i love you too :3

as i said its 2.50 today. theres no reason not to buy it.
i agree with temzillas earlier post, theres also another goal in terraria now to rid the world of the corruption, a twisted biome home to the eater of worlds boss. (after killing the 4th boss the original 3 get an upgrade along with the entire world becoming noticably harder. and the corruption spreads wildly, but theres an anti-corruption biome that spawns, the hallow.)
anyway, heres a vid of the upgraded eye of cthulhu boss. note the armor/weapons made of the green metal are the second best in the game while the ones in blue are the third best.

i love em too!....for free

EDIT: Ok to be more accurate and serious, honestly, i dont care about the indie-developer's if i pirate something, i just do it, end of the story. BUT on the other Hand, i would buy such Indiegames with really nice Multiplayer(like Dungeon Defenders, Minecraft and Terraria) because Multiplayer is what keeps the long-term fun up. 10 buckets are not much, i agree, for someone who works, but im still a student and i buy all my stuff in Stores, so i rarely charge my Bankaccount to pay over the stupid Internet(if Terraria would be in a Store to download like u go into a store and get it on a USB-Stick u bring from home, i would have buyed it right now cuz i was in the Town eating a Kebab and thats 3 Pounds, not 2,50.) If i would work there would be always money on my Bankaccount and im a Person that must give out money if i have money, i cant save money without a Goal(like buying a new Car, House, or just a Videogame) so the 10 Buckets are rly no problem.
Ok end of my Wall of Text.
Short version
I dont care about Indiedevelopers, but if i would happen to have some Money on my Bankaccount i have no problem paying for it since its not rly that much.

Nope, the "build stuff by using blocks scattered around" genre.
And yeah I do know there are things like Lego out there.
Gosh,... ppl can be pretty dumb just for the sake of sounding smart, can they?
For all that stuff I "failed" to quote here:
Terraria's based on the same concept as Minecraft (because they noticed that ppl actually are into this^ genre), but they developed it further since they had already the base concept and it was easier to add things.
But, duuuuuuuuuh.... "Minecraft did it first and OMGOSH both uses blocks and youre also attacked by zombies at night" ...
Couldnt care less who did what first, just seeing ppl *****ing about Minecraft while theyre all into Terraria makes me wonder, if they actually dislike the game or the progger behind it.
Guess only some new deeps of hypocrisy then.
In the end: Terraria(-oversized monsters) = Minecraft.
