The main reason for AP, is because your combo is Ult in, AA, Q, AA.
With a lich bane, that means that you do Ult > Lich Bane Proc > Q > Lich Bane + Q Proc.
Your standard build is Rylai's > Gunblade > Deathcap > defensive items like GA > situational items like void staff.
Items to avoid include Guinsoo's Rageblade, Trinity Force, and basically anything in that vein.
90% of the time you should get Sorc Shoes, but Merc Treads are essential when they have cc.

Tri lane for life.
Full AP with Gunblade seems best.
"I saw [Twilight: Eclipse] in theaters with a girl I was dating at the time. I spent more time staring at my toes and wiggling them than I did watching this abomination. When Edward proposed to Blank Face, I finally looked up with a revelation.
I blurted out loud, in a dead silent theater full of teenage girls on opening night "Wait a minute, Edward has no blood flow. How does he get an erection?" I heard several men laughing, and had several girls turn and stare at me.
I did not get laid that night." - Berengier817

I think he's talking about building Gunblade early.
My opinion is that people like the stats it gives you, but I think it's much better just to go full AP then get Gunblade later.
If you want sustain pick up a Revolver early and that should do fine until you get your Gunblade.

You shouldn't build gunblade first unless you are losing your lane pretty hard.
If you play smart, Rylai's>Lich Bane>Deathcap>Gunblade should be your standard build.

Huge sustain.
Gunblade offers akali 37% spell vamp because of her passive.
Tri lane for life.

Pretty much this.
But if you need more lane presence a revolver is a good idea.

I was wondering about this question and I have played both of kinds. For one hand, Akali AP. ítems: Rilay's, Bansky, Lichbane, Void Staff. If I'll get much harassed, I buy hextech gun for more survival with the spellvamp. If I build this items, I'll make a crazy dmg, I can dominate literally.
The other other build is; Hextech, Rilay's Bansky and Lichbane. With his build, I can realized that I don't make tons of damage than ap build, but for other hand I can considerer that I have more survival with that spellvamp. In other words, swap damage on survival (spellvamp). Well, If I want more survival I will build HP items, even resistances, that's why I don't like hybrid build.
With Akali, I love delete literally enemies' hp in mid/top lane. Akali is an anti-carry, that's why I think it's more viable build her as full AP instead of hybrid.
Can someone can tell me why is viable get Hextech gunblade?
Sorry for my english, I tried writting my best english.
