^ This. I get so many bonus souls by suggesting we take golems when there isn't a cannon in our minion wave. You will also get souls from the Lizard Elder if you help your jungler with it (leave the area and come close enough to spawn soul but not steal EXP) and from Dragon. I normally get 1-2 per wave, excluding the cannon minion, and you get them per kill also.

Well, normal minions have a 20% chance that they will drop a soul.
Also considering that every 3 minion waves a siege minion spawns which has a 100% chance to drop a soul, let's make a calculation to help DarkPercy calculate :P

Each minute, 2 minion waves spawn. Each wave consists of a minimum of 6 minions.
In total, you will have 12 minions.
The amount of souls you will get from this = 12 * 0,2 = 2,4 souls.

Now, adding the siege minion, which is 1/3 soul each wave (since he only spawns every 3 waves).
We have 2 waves each minute, so that would be: 2,4 + 2/3 = 3,066666667 ~ 3,1 souls each minute.

If you want a higher amount of than that, you either have to be lucky, or get a lot of champion kills :P

Mobafire says 20%, wiki says 33%, strange :P

Just a quick redo then:
Recalculation is easy: 12*0,33333333 = 4

4+ 2/3 = 4,67

Yes, it's quite a difference :O

Alright... so it turns out it's going to be much more complicated than it should have been... Minions give this amount of experience:

Melee minions are 64 exp +5 every 3 minutes
Ranged minions are 32 exp +3 every 3 minutes
Cannon minions are 100 exp +7 every 3 minutes

So if we want to know how many minions it takes to level up, we have to know what the time is in the game at all times while killing the minions... which makes the calculation near impossible to be accurate. I think I'll just stick to the 3.5 souls/level thing :P. Maybe 4. Still not sure x_X

If I recall correctly, "the common wisdom" says that you're supposed to have at least twice your level of souls in the early levels, three times your level in the mid levels, and four times your level for the late levels. I mean, level one to two is only a couple of minion waves (in a duo lane), and you're supposed to have about four souls around the time you hit level two.

Which also doesn't take into account the soul or two from the jungle mobs, if you choose to stick around and get them.

Just played a Thresh game (I didn't even remember I owned him lol)

I had an average of 4 souls/level at lvl 1 and 2, an average of 5 souls/level from 3 to 6 and after that I had 6+ souls per level

... that's pretty far from 3.5 lol
