This doesn't really have anything to do with a build.

Your main build should be what you go if everything goes as planned (which is almost never). On occasion, you may need a defensive item (That you'd rather not build into anything bigger) because something is going wrong such as.

1. Your enemy is outplaying you.
2. You are behind from a gank.
3. You are ahead from a gank or are outplaying, and want to be really aggressive.
