LW is better in the vast majority of cases, as my original post implies, by my preference to use it.
There are some rare cases when it is not the best.
And now bringing up deathcap for your shields?

And as a side note, if you really want to boost the shield, your much better with an AAS, since it gives slightly less AP than the cap (~11 AP, equal to 8.8 damage, before MR), but also provides mana regen, mana and AD (from manamune).
