Box baiting is pretty much all that AP shaco has. His ganks fall off rapidly past level 5 and you have to rely on enemies being stupid and walking into your boxes, a strategy easily countered by any organized team with wards and Oracle's. It works in low ELO solo queue.

I don't know why I am able to kill and stay viable end game to. You just have to continue widdling down the enemy and constantly use shiv and then go in for the kill. I have played against people who warded and used oracles it doesn't do much of anything if you don't stack boxes. I mean by all means use them but I don't understand why everyone thinks that is his main source of damage because it is not by a long shot.
Unless you get focused by multiple people at once you can almost always get away. I mean he has epic escape abilities. The point is you are not supposed to be directly in the teamfight. But just outside it throwing down boxes, shiving, and moving around your clone. If someone comes close just Q away and the person is separated from their team if they follow to far.
He is awesome at harassment and can do insane damage. If you get enough AP you can do some insane numbers. He is not meant to be a good farmer which is why you pick up a philosophers stone to get more money, health regen, and mana regen, all things he needs. I mean it just makes sense to fix his problems with an inexpensive item.
I have gotten my shiv to do insane amounts of damage and have half healthed champions plus the slow can prove priceless for allowing your team to chase them down. When you get lich bane it is used to push towers a lot better. It is not used to poof into the middle of the teamfight and get yourself killed it if you poof in it is to add to the effectiveness of decieve as a finishing move.

Pretty much all the above. Ap shacos will generally have a high number of kills and assists but at the same time they arnt really a proper contribution to the team. All ap shacos can do is pick off weak (underfarmed or low health targets) targets, whilst ad shaco can solo dragon at level 6, still have decent boxes, stronger late ganks, more backdoor potential, faster tower killer, better farmer.. a high KD ratio isnt something that instantly says "i am a good player" or "this build rox". While AP shaco is good for killstealing he is medicore on rest. He cant push THAT efficiently the lanes/towers and he is somehow passive since he focuses on making those damn 99999 box traps in the bushes.

When I was thinking I think it is because many AP Shacos have no idea what they are doing or they are the annoying people who just sit in a bush and camp boxes. I say AP Shaco is soooo much more than box stacking, in fact I frown apon it because it almost always leaves your team down a man. AP Shaco does insane damage with his two shiv, boxes and clone. I mean that is three abilities that scale off of AP.
If you don't believe me read through my guide and try to apply some of the principles stated within and hopefully you will see the viability of this unappreciated champion. Don't bash it until you try it. Not everyone can be smarty and crazy enough to play AP Shaco really well but you should be able to do decently.
