I played about 200 ap trist games spanning a month right before the dfg nerf. She's quite strong at low elo, if not the strongest snowballing mid in sub 1200 elo. The dfg rework in season 3 actually buffed the **** out of her. She has some poor matchups though, and she loses to smart people, like I said.

Maximum AP-ratio without bonus items: 0.8*4+1.0+1.5*5 = 11.7
Because

So max AP Ratio would be 5.70, not 11.7.
Also very risky, as a lot of AP Carries can deal damage at a range, but Trist has to go all in. It's pretty much the reason why

Because it's hard to pull off without good communication among team members, similar to how AP Yi is viable, but we never see him in games.
Other AP champions are generally safer than trist due to the fact that they can stay at a distance and do damage, while trist has to jump on a target in order to land a lot of her damage. Also, tritst's Q is completely wasted on an AP build. It can be argued that AP yi doesn't benefit from his E AD buff, but it does help him with last hitting in lane. AP trist is very fun, and she has the potential to become a viable competitive pick, but only in a 5 person pre-made such that everyone is on the same page.
