League of Legends (LoL) Question: Karthus and Soraka

    Karthus and Soraka

So, a lot of people think of Soraka as the #1 counter to Karthus. Constantly in solo queue I see teammates pick Soraka because there is a Karthus on the other team. The common claim is that Soraka's ultimate negates Karthus's ultimate, and vice versa. If they negate eachother, why don't people consider Karthus as a "counter" Soraka

Requiem is really good for securing kills that would have otherwise escaped and for providing kill potential in all three lanes at once. Having Karthus ultimate up means that your bot and top lane can afford to be more aggressive since they have some extra damage to work with.

Wish is great, but can be hard to use effectively since you'll waste the cooldown if the ally you're trying to save ends up dying anyway. It's really effective at pretty much heal-baiting everyone on the enemy team as well as providing those clutch saves that most people know about.

So you see, they kind of serve opposite functions. While Requiem has kill potential and applies pressure, Wish relieves pressure. It also means that if Karthus ults while Soraka is alive with her ultimate up, his potential damage is drastically reduced, making it really difficult to secure kills on anyone that isn't extremely low on health.

Plus, as throatslasher mentioned, Soraka gets even more useful when she's in the same fight as Karth. She has another huge heal to save people with, her passive is an MR aura (which really helps with protecting your carries since they won't have built much MR) and she even has a silence. A silenced Karthus can't cast Lay Waste or Wall of Pain, nor can he safely channel Requiem while he's alive. I'm pretty sure you can't even use items while you're silenced, so you can potentially kill him without giving him opportunity to use Zhonya's Hourglass to buy himself more time.

These are all reasons Soraka is a good reactionary pick to a Karthus. What does Karthus have to counter Soraka? You're hardly going to pick your mid laner so you can use their ultimate to counter the enemy team's support's ult. In close-quarters, Karthus has no real advantage over Soraka, so he's still at a disadvantage. Plus if you try to make any plays with your ult in bot lane, Soraka will have both Astral Blessing and Wish combined with her passive to keep her carry alive.

    Sustain > Damage
If the damage isn't 100% kill.
But soraka kinda sucks now anyways

Thank you for your in-depth response. It makes more sense now. Particularly the last paragraph because Soraka can almost guarentee that one person will stay alive from a Karthus ultimate if she uses Astral Blessing and Wish on the target.

I believe throatslasher is referring to teamfights. If Karthus is silenced he really can't do much what so ever unless it involves dying or auto-attacking.

I think picking Soraka counter Karthus is much worth than pick Karthus counter Soraka.

I just think Soraka is bad.

And I agree with that statement, because if she's forced to use her ultimate, she can't be clutch with it when she wants to be.

I rarely see either of them anymore, quite honestly.

Karthus relies on a coordinated team more than other champions. Some people don't understand that you don't need to waste Exhaust to get in range for the last auto-attack on the 100 health Nunu & Willump because Karthus can save the day with his Requiem.

Karthus ultimate deals more damage than Soraka's heals, it won't work most of the times.

^ Pretty much this. Since Karthus will build AP items and support Soraka usually doesn't build strong AP items, Karthus's damage > Soraka's Wish unless she can use Heal and has her passive nearby as well.

I did the math and their ultimates negate each other out pretty equally with the same AP (so, AP Mid Soraka) without MR calculations. However, I would assume AP Karthus's Ult would out damage a Support Soraka ult.

I don't see how karthus counters Soraka.
