Champion Overview:

Shyvana is a tanky bruiser top lane. She has incredible dueling potential and push power as well as lacking any mana costs on her spells. Shyvana is a strong bully due to the fact her damage is mixed between physical and magical, has very fast waveclear, and to top it all off has a strong escape ability.

Skills Overview:

Dragonborn-Shyvana gains 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 armor and magic resist. These bonuses are increased every 5 levels and are doubled in Dragon Form.

Shyvana's passive grants her bonus armor and magic resist. It's pretty simple... It's just like having another rune page on top of your own. This value raises as you level up and doubles when you are in dragon form giving you a decent amount of "free bulk".

Twin Bite- Shyvana strikes twice on her next attack. The second attack will deal 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 % of her attack damage as physical damage. Both attacks will trigger on-hit effects. Shyvana's autoattacks against non-structures reduce the cooldown of Twin Bite by 0.5 seconds. Dragon Form: Shyvana cleaves all units in front of her on her next attack. Each unit hit will be dealt on-hit effect and grant Fury twice.

Shyvana's first skill is twin bite. This is an on next hit move that counts as 2 auto attacks. This allows you to use it after an AA for a reset netting you 3 autos. This is useful for instagibbing wards as well as using your lifesteal and on-hit effects. In dragon form this move is a cleave in front of you.

Burnout- During the next 3 seconds, Shyvana deals 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+0.2 per bonus attack damage) magic damage each second to nearby enemies and gets 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 % increased movement speed. The movement speed bonus is reduced by 15% of the original amount every second. Shyvana's auto attacks increase Burnout's duration, up to a maximum of 4 seconds. Dragon Form: Shyvana now scorches the earth where she walks, leaving a trail of fire for 5 seconds that will continually deal magic damage to enemies that pass over it.

Shyvana's second skill is burnout. This skill deals AoE damage in the area around Shyvana over a period of time. Auto attacking while burnout is in effect will increase its duration. This move will also act as your movement speed steroid that will allow you to stick to and deal constant damage to enemies. The damage from this ability is MAGICAL that scales off of your ATTACK DAMAGE. This ability also clears creep waves very quickly. In dragon form this skill will leave a burning trail on the ground as you run around with burnout on (essentially singed poison).

Flame Breath- Shyvana unleashes a fireball forward in a line that will mark all enemies it hits, dealing 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+60% of ability power) magic damage to them. Shyvana's basic attacks against marked enemies deal bonus magic damage equal to 2% of their maximum health. Dragon Form: Flame Breath engulfs all units in a cone in front of Shyvana.

Shyvana's third ability is flame breath. This move is a linear skillshot that deals magic damage to enemies hit and applying a debuff to them. While the debuff is on enemies your basic attacks will deal 2% of the enemies max hp in bonus damage. This counts as an Onhit ability meaning your Q will trigger for 4% of the enemies max hp. This ability will be used to harass/farm from a distance in lane. In dragon form you will apply this to the area in front of you making it synergize with your Qs cleave on all the enemies.

Dragon's Descent- PASSIVE: Shyvana's basic attacks generate 2 fury, even in dragon form or against structures. While in human form, Shyvana will also generate 1 / 2 / 3 fury each 1.5 seconds passively. Active: Shyvana transforms into a dragon and dashes to a target location. Enemies along her path take 175 / 300 / 425 (+70% of ability power) magic damage and are pushed toward her target location. Shyvana must have a full fury bar to use this spell. While in Dragon Form, Shyvana will lose 5 fury every second. Once her Fury bar is empty, she will return to her normal state.

This skill is your engage/escape spell. This spell turns you INTO A DRAGON. Essentially this is throwing down the glove, things are srs now (Or when your trolling your friends a good kill steal move =3).In lane you will use this to try and duel/kill your opponent/escape from ganks. Once lategame comes this will be the move to throw yourself into the enemy team to disrupt their lines/kill their carry.

General Matchups:

Strong Vs

Nasus- You have the ability to heavily deny and bully him from his free farm. You will also be able to scale like a monster for the amount of pressure you have in the top lane.

Riven- Once you get some armor and 6 you will just straight up beat her in fights. The main thing you need to know or this is DO NOT LET HER GET FREE DAMAGE. If she is able to get a combo on you, you HAVE to respond or she can whittle you down and kill you with her ult.

Renekton- Now I say Shyvana is a good pick vs him VERRRY Lightly. Shyvana is my pick into Renekton. But this lane is HELL for you as shyvana until you hit level 11~ and get your sunfire cape. At which point you will outscale him be able to win top and have a much stronger presence on the game as long as you are not down like 3 kills or 50 CS.

Weak Vs

Trundle- His ult gives him the ability to outduel you at 6. You have the early bully advantage, but if you do not use it properly this lane can very quickly go sour.

Olaf- This lane is annoying until you are able to get ~giants belt and boots. After that you can force farm fest and then it will become who can dive the enemy carries better pretty much. You will have a slight advanatge in that you are able to peel for carries if needed.

Ryze- This lane is annoying and he scales just as well as you do into the lategame (Probably even better). He has ranged advantage and can play very safe in this lane. The way you beat ryze in a lane is to 1.) Get Flash advantage 2.) Get a gank and snowball off of it. If you get either of these or both you can do decently in this lane.

Playing AS/VS:

As:
  • Keep your burnout going as long as possible with AAs.
  • When you trade with an enemy you need to try and maximize burnout damage as much as possible. Alot of shyvanas strength as a bully in lane comes from how long it lasts.
  • Try to minimize the amount of free damage you take. You do not have innate sustain and getting chunked means you have to burn more pots.
Vs:
  • Try and get in as much poke damage as you can, do not commit to full all in trades with her.
  • Try and gank her early and stop her momentum in the top lane.
  • Dragon is super predictable and easy to dodge.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:
-Manaless.
-Good Lane.
-Good Scaling.
-Safe.

-Does a good amount of MIXED damage, making her hard to build against.
-Decently easy to play.
-Your a dragon.
-Vroom Vroom mobility.
-Scales regardless

Cons:
-No innate sustain
-Ranged can safely play vs her in lane.

Conclusion:

Shyvana has been a top I used to love to play back when it was unconventional and one that I have mixed feelings about having as a meta top laner. Shyvana is a champion that feels like all you do is jump in and watch people around you die. Next week I will be writing about top lane Dr. Mundo. As always summoners have fun and good luck on the fields of justice!
