"From my own experimenting, just make a new layer, colour the parts that want to be coloured, put it over the original layer, and then change the settings of the layer (colour dodge etc).
That's the way I do it."

"Make sure you have at least two copies of your render. Then make the Topaz'd layer of a lower opacity, so the layers blend. You'll less likely get any pixelation that way."
