This is pretty common these days and I see very few people dealing with this "properly". Shoving the lane is probably the worst option. Freezing the lane is not too bad but you can do it more efficiently.
The "proper" or ideal way to deal with this in my opinion is manipulating the wave so the enemy minions start to shove towards your lane. This way you deny xp and gold the most efficiently. Normally by freezing the lane, enemy top laner loses 2-3 creeps but by manipulating the wave, the enemy top laner can even lose the whole minion wave.
This is how it's done

You just simply go on the brush where the minions come from (depends on which side you are). When the minion wave is coming at you, you simply take aggro by stepping out of the brush so minions start to focus you, after they're grouped a little, you walk back to the brush and let the minion waves meet.
