"Teemo can be played that way because he is ranged. His role and playstyle in the game still remains the same, the only thing that changes is his build.
What would be similar to your guide is when you would play teemo as a jungler, full tank with engaging purposes. "

"There is a difference between not fitting in the meta and being plain stupid. Maokai has a skill set based around engaging a teamfight and soaking as much damage as possible. He has no defensive escapes and no range that would help him kiting with his Q.
