After looking at the guide, I suppose it's because you end up buying some form of refillable pot which negates the purpose of Secret Stash, and Runic Affinity would increase the duration of blue buff, but would Secret Stash or Assassin be viable in this build?
in high elo, playing varus means many 5v5 groups, longer fights, longer sieges etc so, i find having any buff in the game lasting a bit longer very useful. either its blue buff, either its baron buff etc.
secret stash : i dont like it because varus needs pots only for a short time in the game, in early levels. That is until he gets tear and maybe serrated and he starts wave-clearing fast and farming from distance. That means he cant get damaged from anyone nor poked down. I think whenever varus is gonna get damaged, its more like an all-in from his opponents, so there is no point in talking about more sustain there xd.
but u can pick this mastery easy, and get like one biscuit every time u get back, instead of the refillable potion that i suggest.
Assassin : well now... varus is not an assassin, so why u wanna pick this ? :D
i mean, it would help u in laning phase i guess... because thats the only period when u are alone xd. later u want to be grouped near your team bcs u are kinda free kills if u are solo in your games :)
So, again, this seems like it works in early game / laning phase.
To sum-up, i think if u want more sustain in your laning phase u go secret stash, if u want more damage in your laning phase u go assassin, or else u just go runic affinity, even if ends up being useless in some of your games xd.
while varus can use his abilities in less than 2 seconds, he isnt a burst type champion. he is a poke champion. he spams his q.
also, adc ranged champions shouldnt buy duskblade, because in every aa they would waste it (and it has way long cd). and if the adc is saving his aa w8ing for the right time to utilize duskblade, then the teamfight is pretty much lost. the only exception i can now think of is graves who is a whole new type of adc on his own.
then again, if you are fed, you deal much damage anyway, so your q/w/aa could leave opponents with 30% hp i guess, so duskblade would finish most of your opponents in that case...
anyway, these are my thoughts.
as i said in a reply above, i dont like essence reaver in this varus build. i guess you built it for the damage and for the 10% cdr. but death's dance offers the same 10% cdr, 15 more ad, death's dance op passives, and it is also 100 gold cheaper than reaver.
ofc reaver gives 20% crit chance but imo it is not worth at all.
besides that, since u were so fed and ahaid, building hurricane for attack speed would be quite good to carry dealing even more damage.
I guess I was just taking some adc habits from bot lane, because I'm an adc main it's sort of instinct to buy such items on Varus. Nonetheless good point and I look forward to seeing your guide improve well in the future.
+1
I haven't played Varus mid since season 5 and I decided to figure out if the new items were effective. This was a High elo normal match. Not sure why I built essence reaver other than the cdr, and I used the precision mastery instead of Intelligence. Got a penta and always poked almost half of their adc's health all the time. I was going to build runaans hurricane last but I want your insight.
