Update (July 20th, 2018): Lots to catch up on...

I made some minor edits to bring the guide, but I'll do a more flushed out update later. The botlane meta is just weird right now.

the bot lane meta is getting changed next patch so ADCs should be good after that again :D they're trying to keep us on our toes

Great guide overall :). Janna has the best poke at level 1 from all supports.

This guide helped me out quite a bit on Janna. I'm finally comfortable enough to use her in SoloQueue. Thanks (=

Patch 8.3 Changes

Minor rune reorganization for the Inspiration tree. We're probably still in League of Stopwatches though.
Finally added W maxing notes to the guide body.
Changed recommended runes from resolve to inspiration. (I'm not jumping on the stopwatch bandwagon, mostly because I keep not actually needing/using it. Perhaps I just need more practice.)

Matchups and warding are still in the works. Sorry for the delay, but semester started and I'm getting swamped already.

Best of luck on the Rift!

I know a guide which is absolutely marvellous and it is THIS ONE !

It is such a masterpiece both in content and design you get my +1 and +fav 2000%

<3 your introduction and the reference to "as much rage in the enemy team as a Teemo" ^^
Very original and beautiful summoner's spells section
Even more original and beautiful runes chapter
All the strategy part is meaningful and covering a wide bunch of variations yet remains super clear
Great items part too but maybe slightly too many choices (trying to find anything not praise to say)

Thank you a lot for this fabulous guide.

You have "steal ward" instead of "stealth ward" in a couple places in your items section btw.

Hey yall! Patch 8.2 hit, and I admit I'm... really sad they got rid of sighstone. Mostly because they also got rid of my beloved Frost Queen's, but sounds like that'll be back in the future!

1/25/2017 Patch 8.2 Updates (a.k.a. rip my active items cdr)
  • Removed Sightstone and its upgrades from items and itemization
  • Added sample rune sets
  • General grammar edits
  • Realized I should comment updates as well because people don't know when the guide is updated

Expect a detailed supports matchup up soon! Formatting it is taking a bit longer than expected.

I’m glad you think so!

Oh, thank you for reminding me, I need to put in a section about this under Strategy.

TLDR: Depends a bit on your play style, but generally when you are aggressive, can poke a lot, or can roam.

I love maxing W first. It makes for more potent AA and W poke, giving you much more lane presence and making you even more of a lane bully. It also gives you more bonus movement speed so you can rotate and roam even more. People don’t really expect Janna to roam (usually), and you can scare people by being everywhere at once (or so it seems to them :P )

It mostly depends on confident you are at poking/roaming, and whether or not you need to shield often. E with only 1 point have a very long (18 sec w/ 0 CDR ) cooldown, so you’ll be able to shield a lot less poke. I like to fight fire with fire and retaliate poke rather than just defensively shielding it though.

The tradeoff is that your ADC is less powerful, because they lose some of the AD buff from your shield. It’s notable at even at 0 AP with a maxed E, you give the AD equivalent to another B. F. Sword.

It can work regardless of what your ADC’s play style is. If your ADC is passive, you get to poke down and potentially zone out the enemy laners. It’s then easier to freeze lane and deny farm because you’ll be zoning. If your ADC is aggressive, poking them down makes your all ins secure a kill more easily. Just don’t let the power get to your head and overextend. :)
