Great Guide! I just had a question about runes.
When do you decide between Comet, Electrocute, and Spellbook? I have heard from some people that Comet isn't even worth using over Electrocute, but that's a whole separate discussion, and to me, it seemed like you viewed Electrocute vs Comet as a preference thing. Is there any matchup you feel either is a must-have?
And in what situations do you reccomend Spellbook over the other two keystones? I would assume for waveclear poke champs like Xerath and Vel'koz, it is best to just try and wait out laning with Spellbook. But what about the other classes of mid laners, like assassins, or mages like Veigar and Annie, or whatever Yasuo is considered?
I know it's different for every person but I would like a place to start when testing options.

back again. some added thoughts after having spammed more spellbook games.

as unhelpful as this is, i believe spellbook is a personal preference rune. it can be both better then both the other keystone options, and also worse. getting use to juggling the spells around and knowing which ones to pick when can make teamfights, but the fact is it can also break them. if you're willing to put the time into getting use to spellbook, it can work great, both defensively and offensively.

as for if there are any particular matchup's where i highly recommend it against certain teams, ive found it useful as a preemptive defensive page, or a late scaling farming page, personally ("personally" being the operative word here). Being able to take a spell of my choice and swap it out for TP or clarity really helps keep you in lane for more time then you otherwise can, and since i can opt for a defensive spell at the start of the game for rough matchups, i feel safer in lane as well. add that to saving gold with boots or stopwatch, and a bit more sustain from biscuits (and even time warp tonic, if you opt for it), helps me feel like im not constantly backing way more then i want to. poke heavy matchups or matchups where you feel like you have 0 chance of winning in lane would both be good options to try it out in, as opposed to comet, which is a safe rune choice, but isnt fully sacrificing potentially winning lane either. spellbook is kind of a "i have no idea how this game will go, but i can adjust accordingly" rune, at least for me.

let me know if none of that made any sense, but im hoping it did.

This all really helped, thanks. After being more conscientious with how my runes are comparing to other options has also helped. It seems like part of the challenge to anivia is also optimizing runes and items. I will try to play more games, so that I can see how I end up doing in these matchups/comps. And I was wondering if you have experimented with phaserush at all? I see Dj Y***in, the gm Anivia, take it alot but im not sure. Just something to think about adding to the guide :)

I can't promise all my answer's here are gonna be satisfactory, but i'm gonna do my best.

I do largely consider it preference, in the end. I personally believe that it's never gonna matter what's "statistically" better or any of that, if one person is just more comfortable with option A over option B, they're going to perform better with option A.

having said that, i do follow a very loose rule set for electrocute vs comet.

Comet - When you feel like you are gonna be more focused on farming in lane and less on trading, and/or if you wanna play a very mid to late game, scaling focused game. Also, if you feel like you're going to be doing a lot more teamfighting vs individual 1 on 1 fight's and picks.

Electrocute - when your confident in your ability to win the lane match-up you're against, and/or if you wanna play a more aggressive early game.

these aren't hard set rules. many will argue that electrocute technically outscales arcane comet. They do tend to be the rules i personally follow though. Arcane Comet does great in teamfights, and is AOE rather then single target, so it can hit multiple people at once. all that on top of the fact that it's cooldown is reduced the longer a fight goes on, make's it super easy to proc multiple times in a short time span. However, if you wanna play aggressive early, and/or feel like you're going to be doing more 1 on 1 fighting for whatever reason, then the raw added burst from electrocute may better serve you. It's also a great rune for those game's where you feel like you can get an early lead and push that lead hard, popping anyone who you catch out in an instant and ending fights before they even start.

Unsealed spellbook is... tricky. I was actually running it in 100% of my game's for awhile, i like the versatility it provides and the ability to pick spells based on how the game was going. it's recent nerf though hit a bit harder then i originally thought it would. It' a keystone that has the potential to be really, really good, and i was running it as my go to simply because i could choose spells based on the game itself, and also adjust my playstyle from passive to aggressive or vice versa after i got a feel for my opponent, rather then trying to guess and hope in champ select.

now, after the nerf's, it's much weaker then it formally was. You can still take it if you want the minor runes from the tree, like biscuits and boots, or stopwatch or something, but i haven't quite adjusted enough to the nerf's myself to really speak on where it falls now. High poke mages, the sustain from biscuits and the gold saved from Boots or stopwatch can be nice, but other then those extreme niche situations im not sure if i recommend spellbook right now. Try it out by all means, if you like it you like it, but unless you're playing into a lane where your scrounging and scraping for every piece of gold you can, you're probably just currently better off with the stat boosts and extra damage from a different rune tree. i can let you know if i change my mind after i play around with it some more, if you want, but currently im just very sad about the nerfed keystone

Hello i am from Poland so sorry for every mistake. I have a question, if i have the manaflow band how i should "stack" mana on this item, I mean when ? BTW:your guide is fantastic!

Reason97 (6) | February 9, 2020 1:35pm
Im glad you're enjoying the guide, and don't worry about any mistakes, it's a small sample size but your English seems excellent!

Ideally you want to stack up Manflow in lane while farming. Poking down the enemy laner with Q+E early on or general trades early on. In an ideal game, manaflow should be fully stacked before your second back or sooner.

This is of course, a "general" rule. some matchups will easily be harder to stack it all the way then other. Xerath is a good example, as landing early Q's and E's on him in lane will be hard if he's playing well and keeping out of range. So don't beat yourself up too much if you don't fully stack it. Manaflow is nice in the fact that's it's one of those runes that is very helpful and very useful. but it isn't gonna destroy your game if you don't stack it as well.

General rule of thumb, look to have it stacked ASAP, probably before your second back. However, if for any reason you can't do that, don't let it get to you either, as it's not gonna hold back your game majorly, either. I hope that answer makes sense!

Thank you since I have created this commenct I started to test other champions but finally I decided to back to the anivia. I got an idea, what do you think about creating some videos about gameplay{ in every video you explain your gameplay}. What's more after some games as anivia I saw an intresting thing, You can use your q, imediatelly after it use your e and when the e is near the target explode q. I am not sure if it changes whatever but i think it is faster than normal combo, as last time keep in mind that my English isn't perfect so sorry for every mistake:}

I really love this guide it shows so much on Anivia. what to build what do in the early to late game i been playing Anivia for 3 or 4 years now and yet i learned few things like i didn't know you could cleanse fizz ult. when i do go spellbook i sometimes take ghost
1
Reason97 (6) | January 18, 2020 7:45pm
don't gotta worry about cleansing fizz ult if you just ban him literally every single game. big brain.

On a serious note though im glad you like it! ghost certainly works, i just personally prefer ignite cause i feel like it's more useful to have as an "on demand" spell, but that's just me.

Hey, nice guide! When would you go Spellbook for Anivia mid? And what summoner spell would you start with besides flash? Thanks for the Anivia guide!

Reason97 (6) | November 18, 2019 4:32pm
hey! sorry for the super late reply, i have been super busy IRL with personal issues.

i usually take Ignite with flash, but an argument can be made for either Barrier or Cleanse too. the reason for this is that ignite and barrier both have very low cooldowns, meaning you'll get a lot of use out of them even while waiting for spellbooks cooldown. It'll also mean less time waiting for your base spells to come back up.

compare this to, say.... teleport. if you run teleport, you get 1 use out of it in almost the time it would take to get 2 spell swaps. meanwhile, with the low cooldown of ignite, you're practically guaranteed a use of it at least once between every single swap. i hope that makes sense the way i explained it?

as for WHEN to go spellbook... honestly it's up to you. for me personally, it's actually been my go to page as of late, as im someone who very much enjoys flexibility (that's part of the reason i love Anivia So much to begin with lol). if you aren't quite use to using spellbook yet, id say run Comet on matchups you aren't confident in, and Spellbook in matchups you ARE confident in.

also, i ALWAYS run spellbook if you take Anivia as a support pick. the added utility you can bring to the support role with all your CC and spellbook is just way too good to pass up.

sorry again for the late reply, but hope you see this anyway!!!!

Hi there Reason97,

This is actually a really nice guide in my opinion, it shows both different runes and items that you can use and different kind of playstyles that you can play on Anivia which is great.

Since the current chapters are all pretty well explained maybe you should try touching on the different phases of the game? (like early/mid and late game), and what you need to keep in mind when playing Anivia so that you won't do as many mistakes during these phases.

Otherwise it's a good looking guide to be honest. :)

working on it now. Should be up soon, i'd like to get it up all at once, but if it starts taking too long i may just do it section by section as i finish :) i appreciate the feedback!

Hello Reason97,
I found your guide on Anivia today and thought that since it‘s a general guide I‘ll take a look. :)
I like how detailed and comprehensible you explain crucial things like item and rune seletion. That‘s definitely one of your very strong points in this guide.
However, I think you could maybe create a chapter on gameplay as well. I‘ll give you an example of how I came to this idea: In your brilliant match up section you talk how Fizz is probably one of the worst threats you might encounter in lane. So I get that you wouldn‘t want to pick Anivia if there‘s a Fizz in the enemy team. What what do you do when you‘re picking first and then the enemy picks the fish? Well, I guess you could dodge but that‘s probably not the most ideal way, right? ;)
So you might want to explain a an additional section how you adjust your gameplay with Anivia when playing against extreme compared to minor threats. What do you do when you‘re losing the lane? Do you only farm or do you try to help others lanes by roaming so you can maybe get some kills? When do you farm and when do you roam (if at all)? Things like that could be mentioned in the chapter I‘m thinking about.
But anyway! It‘s a neat guide already and I think you‘re probably still thinking about expanding it little by little by yourself. Also, the things I‘ve talked about are just some small suggestions. :)

Cheers, Wicked Cherry.

I have to say, having never received any feedback on this, i really appreciate you taking the time to make a post Wicked! i've been thinking about doing a "how to play" section for a long time, since pretty much the day i made the guide actually. I'm just struggling with finding a way to do it that seems clear and easy to follow. an issues i've had with a few guides on here is that some of them have a TON of really useful info on so many different champs, but they're just so hard to read and look at that some people never even notice it all. I'm trying to find a way to make the section, and if you have any good examples or anything like that i'd love a link to them! i really appreciate the critique, it's always good to get some helpful criticism. i am looking into the idea, so hopefully it'll be something i can do and do well before too much longer.

as for Fizz, honestly just screw him lol i can't stand him and i ban him 9 times out of 10 when i play midlane.

No problem, I like helping. :)
That's so great that you've had something like that in mind.
I think there are a lot of different approaches. For example, you could basically do three differtiating sections: Hard match ups - even matchups - simple matchups. And then list champions in each section and say what you'd play like and what to take care of.
Another possibility that's a bit more general would be to do "when you're winning lane", "when you're going even" and "when you're losing" and then explain what you could do and what you shouldn't do.
I've also seen people display an icon of a champ like and underneath they've created a spoiler tab that you could open by clicking and then get specific information about how to play against that certain champion. I'm sure there's many more possible ways but these three popped up in my mind at first. If you want, I can try to link you some guide as example for each possibility. But if you have another idea, feel free to just try it out. :)

Haha, I like to do that with Pyke. xDD
