Hey Tinietinytechz,
I found your guide today and as momentary Sona main I thought I should check it out. :)
Personally, I think your guide mentions the most important pros and cons. However, I think it's a bit short. Like why do you use these runes? How do you play Sona in game (early/mid/late). You say:
Quoted:
This guide will teach you everything you will need to know about Sona, her abilities, runes and masteries, itemization and matchups so that you can gain more lp in your ranked games.

But your introduction is somewhat longer than the whole rest of the actual guide. :/ I think that might be the reason why people downvoted your guide which is sad because I'm sure you're simply working on these things right now. If that's the case, I'd probably suggest to put the term "in progress" into the title.
Anyway, hope my comment helped a bit and keep it up.

Cheers, Wicked Cherry.

Hi Wicked Cherry,

I'm so sorry for the late reply. I should probably say the guild is work in progress as i'm currently have some other stuff IRL but thank you for the advice and I’ll fix it now. I promise I will get the guide fully completed soon. Also since you asked some really good questions lemme answer them personally.

I personally like klepto as I find sona scales really well with the additional gold that she gets from proccing it. Nothing wrong with aery personally and I don’t find it bad, just most of the time in ranked I would probably go klepto. You might not feel it but I promise you that when you get really good consumable buffs and additional gold that really goes a long way sona’s 2 item spike.

Magical Footwear I just find personally the best you can get here compared to hexflash and the free stopwatch. It can fell pretty bad if you do lose lane and then you can’t get boots, but generally I find that I can use that 300g to get closer to my items like athenes and ardent which I find are really important as a enchanter support.

I would always choose free biscuits. Minion dematerializer does nothing for you here and while future’s market can help you get your items quicker, the safety of the sustain of health and mana is too good to pass up. Also the biscuits restore from missing hp and mana so it’s really good compared to health potions or refillable potion. As sona you should be trying to use your q off cooldown to proc spellthief so that you can get wards more quickly therefore the biscuit help with the mana aspect. It also increases max mana also.

Cosmic Insight just offers scaling, all the stats it gives is really good. More CDR and the increase of the cap to 45% is the best part of it. The 5% on summoner spells is really good after level 2 engages when normally everyone bot lane if they don’t play safe uses summoner spells, so you’ll have your flash and ignite up before the enemy does. This is really good against adc’s as normally they won’t run this rune unless your ezreal, so you can catch them out. The 5% item cdr is also nice.

Conditioning I like for the free scaling stat it gives. You can probably argue with me that I should probably get boneplating here as it will make me tankier to all in compared to conditioning in lane. I find that boneplating that if you vs really good enemies that they’ll hit you once by a skillshot or autoattack and then wait till its on cooldown so you don’t get the full benefit from it. Also you aren’t a support like braum where naturally you’ll position yourself to tank spells for your adc where in this case you’ll get the full use of boneplating. With that being said I find that biscuits will give you the sustain that you need so that can keep poking without dying in lane. However if you feel uncomfortable with a matchup or position, feel free to take bone plating instead of conditioning.

Revitalize is pretty simple, instead you are gettings a lot of healing amp from your items, like athenes, ardent and maybe later redemption and mikeals, this will just further boost how much healing you’ll do in teamfights.

How to I play sona in the early/mid/late game?

That’s a pretty full questions but I’ll try keep it pretty condensed but where you’ll get a lot from it.

Early game is I would say generally you are a lot weaker compared to other supports. While you do poke, your heavy poke comes from your passive which kinda cost of mana to do, even if you wait between your q cooldown. However this is a really good time to find out how good the enemy adc is. I like cheesing by prepping my power chord to 2 stacks before lane so that when the minions meet, I will immediately try to auto-q-auto the enemy adc, The 2nd auto will proc your passive so that you do more damage. As a lot of people don’t play or know sona’s skillset as she is not very popular, you’ll find that a lot of people don’t know how her passive works and that it requires 3 spell cast, after seeing me poke them heavily for 1/3 of their hp. Hopefully you can get into their mind with it. You’ll know what im talking about when it happens and its alot easier to do it against enemy adc’s that are really short range like kai’sa and vayne. If this happens, lane becomes a lot easier.

Sometimes this doesn’t happen though, so I still try continue to poke with q and auto’s. It’s a lot more harder to against engage supports like naut, pyke, thresh and blitz. But try to position yourself out of the range of the hook but in range of your q. Your q range is really long, so you should be proccing it even in hard lanes. It might be super dangerous to auto which is fine, however I’m sure you’ll be able to sneak a couple in. A really good time to do this is when they fail their hooks. You have this long to try poke for klepto and spelltheifs while their hook is on CD. Keep in mind that they will have cdr from support item, runes and possible items depending on what they buy.

I find that if you even go even in lane as sona, you’ll have a more likely chance of winning. She is a support that scales so well with items and she is the best abuser of ardent in the game. Losing lane on sona is really hard, you are normally underlevled and outside your ulti if feel like you don’t have a lot of impact as you also don’t have your items.
However if you do win game and get some kills, you’ve setup yourself up well for the rest of the game. I don’t have a number but whenever I win lane, I definitely win a lot more games despite how the other lanes are going even if top, mid and jungle are behind.
Mid Game
Correct warding is probably the most important thing midgame as it set you up for taking and defending objects, taking enemies and allow for teleport plays from your toplaner. It’s important to do this as it correct warding get better as high elo you go up. While warding be careful not to facecheck dangerous brushes. Sona has no way of checking brushes and being a fragile support, she is definitely free gold of anyone.

Around this time you should be near or close to completing athenes and ardent. I believe that these items make any fight that you take super advantageous compared to most other supports with 2 items. I won’t go into make details but think about the ardent buff on 5 people and with athenes how much healing you can do. It is crazy how much stats and healing sona can give with just these 2 twos items and how it complements her kit.
Make sure you’re saying back most of the time and only moving forward to land an ultimate or when key cc spells are used. Sona no matter what still dies very easily to a stun and someone casting spells or attacking while you can’t do nothing.

Lategame

I think in most games sona is probably the most important champion on your team. Your spells are on super low cooldown and your heals are crazy high at this stage of the game. Your movement spell from your e also allows your allies to move in team fights and objectives a lot more easier now also. While most is still the same as midgame. However I want you to think about it like this, Sona gives so many buffs and she can sometimes act as 7th and 8th items for your carries in the late game, it’s crazy and you should have this mindset. You dying is like your team losing 1 or 2 whole items, so keep this in mind in the late game when you are playing. Without mentioning athenes and ardents again which you can proc on everyone on your team, I’ll mention the more important ones.
Power chord – Diminuendo reduces damage from 25% increase by 4% for 100 ap your have, essentially an exhaust on a super low cooldown. Super useful against assassins, carry top laners and the enemy ADC.
Power Chord – Tempo is basically is a 40% slow which also scales by 4% for every 100AP. This is really useful when your are chasing people, as while your team is super fast, you also slow the enemy down.
Crescendo – Your Ultimate is an aoe stun and critical in teamfights. Generally I will try to use it on priority targets like whoever on the enemy team is fed, but If you can hit it on a couple of people in teamfights its not to bad either. Other uses includes the enemy jungler when you guys are fightning baron or elder dragon or using it as peel on my backline (keep this in mine if they don’t have flash also.)
Redemption – Huge AOE heal for the team in critical teamfights, most people will forgot also that since you didn’t get redemption first item and the heal will be small, this is on the case if you get ardent first and maybe even mikeals beforehand. Trust me you will be surprised and everyone else will be too. To allow the redemption active to hit try to use your other spells to by time, either your w or your ulti. Most people forget that it also does 10% of maximum health as true damage which is crazy I find.
Mikeals – Super useful if you find that your ADC doesn’t get a QSS against any stuns, but you can also use it on other people also. I just find that everyone seems to tunnel for the ADC as normally it’s the easiest target. Also the 20% heal and shield amp is super crazy and not to be forgotten.
I hope this answers your questions about how I play sona and my reasonings behind it. I promise you I will update the guide soon.
Sorry if there is many typos, but hopefully you still get my main ideas.

Many thanks,

tinietinytechz

Heey,
no problem about the late reply. But wooow it's really lengthy!

Klepto vs Aery: I can understand why Klepto would make sense, but I really prefer Aery. Never liked Klepto that much personally but I guess since Sona is quite THE poke support, it would make sense.

Magical Footwear: I do use that rune too. It's basically free boots and better than waiting for the free Stopwatch.

Cosmic Insight: That's the rune that I'm using too. I quite like it. I mean it's free CDR which means more poke, more heal, more CC.

As for the other runes, I go Summon Aery, Manaflow Band (probably for the same reasons you go Biscuit Delivery), Absolute Focus and Scorch. I know it can be risky, but it's actually the runes that work best for the way I like to play Sona. :)

Game phases
Early: Haha, I do that too. I press Q in base and then when I help my jungler, press it a second time. Since most junglers will start bot atm.
I actually experience that early is one of the most important time when you can play mind tricks. Like if you are able to poke them down heavily, they'll be afraid and try to farm safely while you'll be able to get your poke out and money in, they enemy adc will lose CS which helps your ADC to get ahead too. I've won quite a lot of game because of the lane dominance potential you have as Sona.

Mid game: Yeah the facechecking thing is quite unpleasant. xD If that happens to me, I'm usually like: "Oh I found them! :D" It usually happens when I want to go warding.
I also experienced that whenever your team feels a little behind, you'll wait until you got your two core items and you're most likely gonna get a comeback.

Late game: I haven't thought as Sona being like 1 or 2 additional items for the team but it makes sense. I think this stage of game really comes down to your positioning as Sona because when you die, your team might not be able to deal as many damage as they can with you AND they'll also not be able to have enough sustain.

Welp, wow again. Thank you for you really detailed explanation. I hope you update your guide soon :) Because I asked these questions to show you that it might be wise to explain your choices and decisions in you guide. :] Anyway, really awesome response! +Rep for you. ♥
