IE is good for your damage output, but BC is **** because you need to hit ppl with normal attacks to deal damage.
IE does give more damage than Sunfire, but sunfire gives a lot of durability and Garen needs that.
Sunfire gives about 2/3 of the damage of an IE with atma's impaler. And that's only on judgment. You don't even need judgment off cooldown to deal damage with a sunfire cape.

Doran's shield
Boots Swiftness
Last whisper / Youmuu
Bloodthirster
Infinity Edge
Last whisper if Im against a generally tanky team.... Youmuu against the squishiez...
I know a couple of you guys might rage on me not getting a sunfire, but my playstyle works fine without it, It just is a bit too expensive for a full out dps garen....
The build works well with me...you should try it out :)

But in all seriousness, Garen should rush sunfire cape, then a bunch of tanky DPS items (frozen mallet, atma's, etc.) and any space for pure DPS should be used for an infinity edge, then bloodthirsters or a last whisper.

2183 base
700 from Frozen Hammer
78 from HP Quints (should eventually get ArPen quints, but meh)
120 from Doran's Shield (to be replaced later, but games don't usually last that long)
= 2961 (3081 with Doran's shield)

No I'm not joking. His mana bar is always empty, something needed to be done about that.

If your attack is going well, you have walked into an ambush.
I feel like my comment earlier went a bit ignored. Trinity force seems to show enough of a difference to actually matter. An additional 150% of your base AD to your next attack is pretty substantial in my opinion, and when combined with his Decisive strike, it makes it a deadly silence that has a 25% chance to slow. Lets not forget that Trinity also adds 30 AD, 15% crit, and 12 movespeed, and thats without mentioning the bonus health you get from it, while not as substantial as sunfire cape or frozen mallet in terms of health, if you're grabbing one of those and triforce, it certainly helps out when grabbing an Atma's. It definitely helps Garen in a Tanky DPS role, and I'm still seeing it everywhere.

Jvstm, there is a reason everyone gets sunfire on garen. Sometimes you just gotta go with the flow ;)
