you WILL have less of a time where you have free red buff
still, landing that taunt is quite often enough, and at the very least it makes them pop summoners
another option which is actually seen decently often is giving red buff to your mid carry at level 1

My friend plays shaco and he ganks once he gets red/wraiths/golems. So basically, it's better to start at red because you catch them off guard so fast.
When I play against a jungler, I usually ward my side bush around level 4. So if a shaco comes at level 2, I'm screwed.

Because of Reginald I can't ever start at red with Shaco, guaranteed gank and usually my team refuses to protect me and goes about their own business.
If the other team doesn't have a jungler I usually go red first with Shen for the early gank to take the pressure off my solo lane and maybe score a kill or two, and if they are doing fine, give my mid an upper hand.

I have to agree with jet on this one, red is very good for the surprise ganks you can pull off thanks to the slow and small dot.
However if you see the opponent in mid has flash and your carry in mid doesn't have any last hit skill or CC i think it would be wiser to just get the blue buff because a gank would most likely fail there (unless he is careless and at high rank play i doubt that).

It's a very good tactic for anyone who can gank before level 4. Starting this way with Shen is probably a good idea.

It give you faster energy regen and thus more sword throws, but I do understand that it's less damage than lizard.
Again; Won't the lizard buff be down by the time you've cleared the jungle? I think that's a con to that jungle path.
Yes and no, it depends on your masteries.
