sorry late response, uhmm you want to:
1. repeat render layer 4 times
2. smudge 1 or 2 of the render layers
3. for 3rd render layer (Above the rest) go around edge with lasso tool at 10px feather and delete, it creates a nice fade effect in contrast to your smudging.
4. keep 4th one for later, i always do ;)
and you should have a nice blended image/render into your background.
it sounds hard but it really isn't;)

the thing is tho, when I go to apply the image to sharpen and whatnot, it fills in what I just deleted with the 10 px lasso thing, so the effect doesn't show much.

layer 8 is the applied image, just show it and hide it and you will see what I mean.
