End game you can not team fight if you have melee champions with you because of his E, not his R. His R is annoying, sure, but buying a BV stops him from opening team fights with it (like any good Karthus should, IMO).

I remember a game as Heimerdinger, where the Karthus was never at any team fights past early game, but somehow got all his Mejai Stacks, and full build end game.
He kept wandering around lanes and jungle, farming and pushing, and grabbing those Requiem kills.

His ultimate is fine. If you are stupid enough to stay in the lane when you have low enough health where he can kill you, then its your own fault.
His ultimate is just another form of damage output. But because it is delayed until after teamfights people see it as a bonus and call it cheap, even though Karthus wasn't doing a ton of damage during the fight.
I think the main problem was that there was no counterplay to him. If he got fed, you couldn't do anything. If you killed him, he still killed you.
I think the best course of action would be to give him a damage reduction while dead, so that there still is counter play to him but he still gets to deal damage. In return for this nerf, I think that it would be smart if they buffed his AP ratios on other things.

I'm damn sorry he's over halfway across the map and one of his buddies tried to burst me down. I'm also damn sorry that the player doesn't need much more than a Q and a R key on his keyboard to play the stupid character.
