Way too useful.
AP carries need defense because they burst and then are typically useless for a few seconds. Thus they need to KEEP BUILDING DAMAGE to stay relevant, and it would be unreasonable to FORCE mages to stack AP. Mages also scale badly into late-game.
On the other hand, AD carries scale hard into late-game and become more potent as the game progresses. They only need a certain amount of AD to be effective because they have sustained, high damage. Giving them an all-purpose attack and defense item takes away the decision of having to sacrifice more AD for survivability.

ah true, I suppose this is why AP also has the abyssal scepter. It would be interesting to see what effect this would have though

BF Sword + Negatron Cloak = Negatron Blade
55 Magic Resist, 60 Attack Damage
Unique Active: Same as Zhonya's Hourglass (?)
I was thinking that the active on Zhonya's hourglass might not be too useful to a ranged AD carry who should be out of the fray anyway. It would be useful for melee DPS, but then again being put into stasis kinda defeats the purpose of "damage per second." So what would the active on such an item be, I mean the main point of Zhonya's is to let cooldowns refresh without taking damage and to prevent from being focused, but what can provide a similar kind of utility to an AD carry?
