Zilean does not work the same way as Sona, Soraka, and Janna.
He's a utility-style support. A Support Mage, to be more specific.
Unlike Soraka, Janna, or Sona, he can't build full support.
He supports without shields or heals and his skills don't impact as decisively as Soraka's Heal/Mana-Restore or Janna's shield/knock-up, or Sona's perpetual aura production.
That is why gold items won't work on him.

Why play a support if you're going to take farm, unless you have a jungler and a roamer? If you're going to take farm why not just play a utility caster? (anivia/tf - I choose these because they have good, reliable cc)
I feel like he doesn't need items to be effective because his rewind + slow / haste can do a lot so far as getting people out of trouble / securing kills without any kind've scaling (no ratios). His ult returns a fair amount of base health, yes it's better with more AP, but I think he still doesn't need a lot of farm to be effective.
I think he does have a weird place right now though. Lots of other supports are more effective than him (Janna / Soraka / Sona) so I don't really know when I'd pick him over those. He also can't carry as a pure mage since he only has one damage spell. It is hard for me to decide what to do with him, haha.

He's a bad babysitter. Thus he can't lane bot well and needs to take a sololane. Sololanes have to farm.

So who would you make go bot? I'm saying he's hard to fit on a teamcomp, and if you're gonna make him sololane, why not take someone else that is a better laner? Where do you see Zilean as being better than other champs?
