I'm not saying he can't solo lane. Yes I know his bombs are very strong early game, which is why I usually go bot and try to keep the other team off my lane partner so he can last hit. I would just think it would be better for a true mage to sololane, and in the case Zil did solo lane, I would wonder who would be bot splitting CS? It seems hard to compose a team if you let Zil solo lane.

Haven't you seen Reginald play Zilean? Take a look at that.
He fits the AP damage/support role perfectly. He isn't really a support. He's more of an AP damage with support elements.

I actually haven't seen any pros play Zilean, haha. I will try to find some. Could you send me some PM's if you have specific videos in mind? Or just post them. Zilean definitely fills an odd niche.

Reginald played AP Zilean in mid in match 2 vs aAa in the tournament.

I have to agree that Zil needs farm and AP to be most effective. I've found a couple of builds that work pretty well, but obviously you can't go by the same builds every time.
If I'm needing to support a bit more early game, and need more nuke late-game(where your support will be good no matter what), I build like this:
Doran's Ring
Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Tear of the Goddess
Blasting Wand or
Needlessly Large Rod
Rod of Ages
Rabadon's Deathcap
You get great mana and mana regen with nifty 30% cooldown reduction, allowing you to spam A LOT and get off some great combo's. Don't forget to buy
Elixir of Brilliance when you can to bring you to the cooldown cap!!
If I need more damage early, or honestly if I'm in an intense ranked game, I feel like this other build works better..:
Doran's Ring
Sorcerer's Shoes
Catalyst the Protector
Needlessly Large Rod to
Rabadon's Deathcap
Then finish
Rod of Ages
After that pick up
Soul Shroud
This build lacks a lot of Cooldown reduction early on, but it's easy to get 15% from masteries and runes. If you pick up
Elixir of Brilliance you'll have 25% reduction before you end up getting Soul Shroud. The reason I pick that up late is it gives you survivability (needed later game) and you can support your team while already being very dangerous.
That's just my two cents..

Buy 1 to 3 Doran's Rings, then catalyst. Then ROA/Tear/Deathcap, then Tear/Deathcap then Deathcap/Tear/Banshee's Veil(if you didn't go ROA). Then whatever the **** you want in the AP or defense category.

Searz, Reginald's team lost with him in mid as Zilean.
Your argument is invalid.
Contrary to "popular" belief, Zilean is a terrible champion if played as a mage.
People are mislead to believe he's a mage carry because he has a knack for getting kills. This is because, and only because, the double
Time Bomb combo has a delay on the second half of it's nuke that makes KSing fairly common for Zilean.
You have to look at his other two skills;
Time Warp, and
Chronoshift.
Neither do damage, they're support/utility skills.
Zilean is a mage Support. Unlike normal supports, he requires AP, but he is still fundamentally a support.
He's a hybrid of sorts, which as history has shown us, doesn't work in the highest of rankings.
TL;DR answer: Zilean doesn't fit in high-elo premade team comps.
He's the kingly ruler of solo-queue, but a crippled old man in premades.
